Teresa Maria Marques de Matos Ferreira

I am a composer, performer, and researcher whose work focuses on the voice as a mediator of identity and as a site for the construction of social and subjective selfhood. I hold a PhD in Ethnomusicology from NOVA University Lisbon, supervised by Salwa Castelo-Branco and Rui Vieira Nery, supported by a doctoral grant from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (SFRH/BD/137392/2018). I also hold a Master’s degree in Ethnomusicology from the same institution, a Bachelor’s degree in Music Composition from the School of Music and Performing Arts of Porto, and a postgraduate degree in Education – Design and Development of Educational Projects from the University of the Azores. My compositional work spans theatre, musical theatre, opera, orchestra, chamber ensembles, and, on a smaller scale, film and dance. I have been involved in numerous collaborative and interdisciplinary artistic projects developed within community contexts, working with both elderly and young participants in socially and culturally challenging environments. I have collaborated regularly with Fábrica das Artes – CCB, the National Reading Plan (Portugal), and the associations Formiga Atómica and Questão Repetida. I am the founder of Prolíficas – Comunidade Compositoras Açores, an association dedicated to the promotion of contemporary music and organizer of the Prolífica Festival, and of Descalças Cooperativa Cultural, a cooperative that promotes social inclusion through artistic practice. I have released five albums of original music and have received several distinctions, including the Labjovem/Teatro and Labjovem/Música awards from the Government of the Azores, the Zeca Afonso Prize from the Municipality of Almada, the Joaquim de Vasconcelos Prize from the Portuguese Society for Music Research, and the Career and Prestige Award from GICAV. More recently, I presented two collaborative operas: Vencer o Dia (libretto and music), created in partnership with Teatro do Sotão, the Algarve Mental Health Association, and the baroque orchestra D’Aquém Mar; and Uma Conversa Infinita, composed for the Leça da Palmeira Music School. I also composed the orchestral work ainda vou encontrar nos teus lábios um cravo, commissioned by the Gulbenkian Orchestra for the collaborative concert Sounds of a Revolution, directed by artist Mikhail Karikis.
