João Vareda received his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Coimbra in 2022, developing functionalized silica aerogels for environmental cleaning and recovery of heavy metals. João received a grant from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation under the scope of the Programa de Estímulo à Investigação 2015 program (funded with 10 k€), with the project AeroMCatch - Silica Aerogels for Remediation of Soils Contaminated with Heavy Metal (2016-2017). In 2023, João Vareda was awarded as Principal Investigator (PI) with the Projeto Semente de Investigação Interdisciplinar 2023, a 6-month proof of concept project, from University of Coimbra and Santander, in the Climate, Energy and Mobility strategic area. The project was funded with 20 k€ and aimed at the development of composite aerogel electrolytes for solid state sodium batteries. In 2024 he was featured in the list of the top 2% most cited scientists (August 2024 data-update for "Updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators") by Ioannidis and Elsevier. João participated in 6 research projects and co-authored 22 publications. Two of his publications are marked as Highly cited paper in WoS, as they are among the 1% most cited papers in the fields of Chemistry and Environment/Ecology fields. He has presented 9 oral and 12 poster communications and has twice been awarded with best oral presentation at a conference.
