Sara Nujo Veríssimo

Sara Nujo Veríssimo graduated in Biology in 2016 at the University of Coimbra (Faculty of Sciences and Technology) and concluded the Master in Ecology in 2018 from the same University. The master's thesis, entitled "The role of fisheries in yellow-legged gulls' diet", used trophic ecology as an indicator of the interaction of human activities with gulls' diet. The main objective of this study was to describe these birds' diet in several populations, specifically from Deserta (Ria Formosa), Pessegueiro, Berlenga and Sálvora islands, and evaluate how these gulls depend on fisheries as food source, through the analysis of stable isotopes and pellets. This work resulted in an oral presentation presented in X Congress of Ornithology of SPEA. Nowadays, is working in a PhD thesis intituled "Assessment of plastic pollution and its detrimental effects on waterbirds" where will evaluate the presence of microplastics and additivives in various waterbird species from Ria Formosa (Algarve) as well as its effects in the physiological parameters and reproductive success. Will also evaluate the incorporation of additives in birds' tissues and the effects of plastic when used as nest material through controlled experiments.
