He is currently a Marie-Curie PostDoctoral Fellow at Centro de Estudos Interdisciplinares - CEIS20. In 2021 he earned his PhD in Integrated Composition, Improvisation, and Technology at the University of California, Irvine with renowned composer-improvisor Prof. Michael Dessen. Omar is a Fulbright Scholar - International Exchange Visitor Scholarship (2017-2021), and FCT Scholar - Research scholarship from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (2019-2021). In the PhD research project "Adventures in Quantumland" he explores the implications of emerging paradigms in Quantum Computing (QC) for new modes of artistic creation. This research was also sponsored by IBM, with whom Omar has been collaborating, namely as a Qiskit Advocate, contributing to repositories online, code and documentation. He applies state-of-the-art approaches from Quantum Computation, developed in Qiskit initiatives and research, to music and other media. In 2013 Omar obtained a Masters degree in Composition and Music Theory, where he conducted research on the relations between music and painting, and their compositional processes. He also graduated in Music - Jazz (Performance in Saxophone) in 2011. Omar is the author and co-author of peer-reviewed papers, other journal articles, instrumental and electroacoustic pieces, multimedia installations and intermedia performances. He also has authored several interdisciplinary explorations, developing new tools and sharing/releasing devices and other software. As an educator Omar has had experience in teaching private lessons and has taught and served as a Teaching Assistant and Teaching Associate (Instructor of Record) since arriving at UCI. As a composer, he has been working towards developing a regular collaborative basis with artists from other performance and creative areas. His music draws on a wide range of influences from Jazz and Contemporary Music to Electronic Music. He also takes many influences from the field of Abstract painting (Kandinsky and Vieira da Silva) and philosophical writings (Albert Camus and Roland Barthes). His work reflects his approach to creative practice within a wider understanding of contemporary culture and emerging technologies.
