Paulo Matos graduated in Biochemistry in 1998, at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon, Portugal. After two years as a FCT research fellow at the Instituto Nacional de Saúde Dr. Ricardo Jorge (INSA, Lisbon, Portugal), where he consolidated his scientific training, he pursued a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Cell Biology under the supervision of Dr. Peter Jordan (INSA) and Dr. John Collard (The Netherlands Cancer Institute, Amsterdam, The Netherlands). In 2004, he received his PhD degree by the University of Lisbon, and was awarded a Post-Doctoral fellowship by the Association for International Cancer Research (AICR, UK), followed by a second Post-Doctoral fellowship by FCT, under the supervision of Dr. Raquel Seruca (IPATIMUP, Porto, Portugal) and Dr. Peter Jordan (INSA), that he used to strengthen his scientific track record. In 2008, he earned an Associate Researcher position at INSA, within the Ciência 2007 program, and started his own independent research group. In 2013 he was awarded a FCT Investigator 2012 development grant and moved to the University of Lisbon, where he had a five-year position as Principal Investigator and Invited Professor at the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department. In 2019, he returned to INSA with a permanent research position, integrating the Oncobiology and Signal Transduction group. Paulo Matos' early research was centered on exploring the involvement of dysregulated small GTPase signaling in tumorigenesis, with a specific focus on understanding how the cancer-associated inflammatory microenvironment contributes to this dysregulation. In more recent studies, his research team expanded its investigations to encompass whole-cell and compartment-specific proteomics. This broader approach aimed at characterizing novel pathways and identify new actionable molecules to enhance the levels and function of CFTR and NIS, two epithelial channels known to be downregulated in colorectal and thyroid carcinomas, respectively. The ultimate goal is to pave the way for the development of innovative therapeutic options for these malignancies. Their latest findings have come full circle and brought their attention to how the inflammatory microenvironment reprograms the epithelial cell transcriptome. This, in turn, profoundly affects the epithelial cell proteome, leading to tumorigenic dedifferentiation. The insights brought by Paulo's research are not only contributing to a deeper understanding of the intricate mechanisms underlying cancer progression but also hold promise for the identification of potential new targets for therapeutic interventions in cancer and other chronic degenerative diseases. Paulo Matos has supervised multiple MSc and PhD students, gathered funding from several competitive grants, has published book chapters and over 65 papers in reputable international peer-reviewed journals, reaching an h-index of 25 with more than 1650 citations (according to Scopus at February 2025).
