Marco A. Campinho (MAC) graduated in biotechnology engineering in 2001 from the Universidade do Algarve (UAlg, Portugal). He completed his PhD in 2007 in Biochemistry at Cardiff University (UK), studying teleost metamorphosis. After two post-docs (2007-2015), he was awarded 2015 an FCT IF2014 Starting Grant (IF/01274/2014), becoming Principal Investigator (PI) in the Centre for Marine Sciences (CCMAR, Portugal), leading a research group deploying a functional biology approach, coupling teleost genetic models, transcriptomics and bioimaging, to resolve thyroid hormone control of vertebrate development. He is now an invited auxiliary professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (FMBC) of UAlg and PI at the ABC-RI. In the last 6 years, MAC established its research group and scientific independence. He recruited 4 PhD students and co-supervised another. Three PhD students, supported by FCT grants (SFRH/BD/108842/2015, SFRH/BD/111226/2015, and SFRH/BD/145640/2019), enrolled in UAlg that are involved in the research line focused on the role of maternal T3 (MT3) during embryogenesis of zebrafish (ZF). One student has since graduated. One PhD student enrolled at the Universidade de Cadiz (UC, Spain; 2019) on the research line focusing on thyroid hormone role in gastrointestinal morphogenesis during salmon smolting (FCT grant 2021.04507.BD). He co-supervises a PhD student (at UC, 2018) focused on intestinal physiology supervised by Dr Juan Fuentes (CCMAR). MAC has supervised BSc theses (>10) in biomedical sciences, biology, and laboratory biomedicine; MSc thesis (>15) in Biotechnology, Oncobiology, Molecular Biology and Microbiology, and Integrated Master in Medicine from UAlg. MAC secured financing from national and international funds and developed several national and international collaborations. MAC has attracted 1.284M euros in project financing from Portugal, Norway, and Japan. MAC has 39 publications (Google Scholar h-index of 20), 14 of which in the last 5 years: 33 original research papers in leading international peer-reviewed journals in endocrinology, physiology and developmental biology (14 of which as first author, 11 as co-author and 8 as senior author), a bioRxiv pre-print as senior author, 2 review paper (one as single author), three editorials in special issues of Frontiers of Endocrinology and a chapter in an international edited book as senior author. He is a reviewer for several international peer-reviewed journals. He guest-edited special issues in Frontiers of Endocrinology entitled "Role of TH in vertebrate development" volume I and II, "The thyroid and Covid-19" volume I and II. He was the editor of e-books with the same title. From February 2021, he has been an associate editor in Frontiers of Endocrinology. He was an invited speaker at the international 2019 SINAL Meeting (Olhão, Portugal), Andor (Oxford Instruments) Microscopy School Lesson 7 (January 2021), and ABC organized Workshop THE CRISPR REVOLUTION: A WORKSHOP ON GENE EDITING, FROM CELLS TO ANIMAL MODELS (May 2021). In 2012, SVI (Netherlands) awarded MAC 3rd place in the international Huygens Image contest. In 2013, he was awarded a special mention for a poster at the 2nd Meeting of the Portuguese and Spanish Developmental Biology Societies (SPBD). In 2014, he received the best oral presentation award at the 27th CECE Conference. In 2017, he was awarded the public choice prize for the best scientific image at the ArtDev exhibition organized by the SPBD. In 2023, he was awarded the best poster prize at the 57th Annual Scientific Meeting of the European Society for Clinical Investigation.
