Lara Rodrigues da Costa Gomes de Sousa

Lara Sousa graduated in Physics/Applied Mathematics (Astronomy) at the University of Porto in 2006, completed a MSc in Quantum Fields and Fundamental Forces at Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine (London, UK) in 2007 and her PhD in Physics at University of Porto in 2011. Lara Sousa is currently a Researcher in Cosmology at Instituto de Astrofísica e Ciências do Espaço. Current research interests include cosmic defects, gravitational waves and particle physics. Lara Sousa has published 31 articles in peer-reviewed international journals, one in conference proceedings and a chapter in the book Gravity, Cosmology, and Astrophysics (Springer - Nature). She has presented her work in 25 national and international conferences, workshops and seminars (twelve times as an invited speaker). Lara Sousa was the Principal investigator of exploratory project "Uncovering the nature with cosmic strings" (~44000EUR), which was ranked first in the Physics panel of the latest FCT call for R&D Projects due to its innovative nature. She was also a PI of the project "Probing cosmic stings and other topological defects with gravitational waves" funded by FCT (~227000EUR), has participated as a researcher in 5 other scientific projects and in another as part of the artistic team. She was also the recipient of 3 fellowships - a doctoral studentship and two post-doctoral fellowships - and is currently an FCT Junior Researcher. She has also supervised two MSc student, a PhD-level doctoral fellow, and a postdoctoral researcher, a Junior Researcher and is currently supervising three PhD students, one MSc student and MSc Internship. Lara Sousa has been strongly involved in different Outreach and Science Communications activities throughout the years: she has, amongst other things, written an outreach article for National Geographic Portugal, gave several public talks and provided scientific support in the development of a sound exhibition about spacetime. She also collaborated with the playwright Raquel S. and Cultural Association Noitarder in the development of an original outreach scientific play (with original script, score and full-dome video) that was hosted by the Porto Planetarium. Lara Sousa is also a member of the LISA Consortium and is strongly involved in its activities. She was part of several juries of degrees, has organized several conferences and is a founding member of the Diversity and Inclusion Group at IA.
