Carla completed the Integrated Master in Biomedical Engineering in 2010/07 at the University of Coimbra. Later, she was selected as a Ph.D. student for the Ph.D. Program in Experimental Biology and Biomedicine (PDBEB) of the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology, University of Coimbra, Portugal. She received an FCT award to develop her research (2010-2014) at Prof. Rego's lab and in 2015 she concluded her Ph.D. with the thesis entitled "Characterisation of human stem cells and therapeutic strategies involving IGF-1 and shRNA in Huntington's disease". During the Ph.D. she spent 2 years, developing part of the research plan involving stem cells, at Daley's lab, Harvard Medical School, Boston, and at Sandrine Humbert lab, Institut Curie, and Anselm Perrier lab, I-Stem, Paris. In 2015 Carla received a Post-Doctoral fellow grant from the FLAD Grants on Portugal-USA collaborative projects to work on a project entitled "Creation and characterization of neural cells derived from pre-symptomatic and symptomatic Huntington´s disease patient-specific induced pluripotent stem cells" under the supervision of Prof. Rego. In 2018, Carla got a grant funded by FCT as Principal Investigator with the reference POCI-01-0145-FEDER-029621 - "iPS cells-derived exosomes - impact on mitochondrial (dys)function in Huntington's disease and potential nanodelivery system for microRNA-based therapeutics". Carla has also been enrolled in several teaching activities: 2007 -2010 as an Adjunct Teacher at Instituto Politécnico de Coimbra, Escola Superior de Tecnologia da Saúde de Coimbra, Portugal and 2017-2018 as an Invited Adjunct Teacher at Instituto Politécnico de Castelo Branco, Portugal, where she was responsible for the disciplines of Patologia I (theoric classe: 135 h; 5 ECTS) and Patologia II (theoric classe: 135 h; 5 ECTS). In 2019, she was a tutor (University of Coimbra) in the discipline of Applied Research II for the Integrated Master's degree in Medicine. She has also been a supervisor of several graduate and undergraduate students during lab rotations and was co-supervisor and supervisor of Master theses. In addition, Carla participated as a volunteer at the COVID-19 UC Lab (2020). She was a researcher at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology, University of Coimbra under the DL57/2016 of the Portuguese law for scientific and technological employment from 2019 to 2023. She supervised a small team with a research technician, postdoctoral researcher, and master's student. In the last five years, she has participated in 6 projects. She is a reviewer in 11 journals and guest editor in Methods Collections at JoVE and at a special edition at CELLS. She has also been actively engaged with the science communication office and "Ciência Viva" at the Laboratory in programs for public outreach. In the last years, she collaborated in the organization of 3 events and participated in 24. Also, she has received 8 awards and/or honours. In her professional activities, she has interacted with 58 collaborators and co-authorship of scientific papers. In 2019 Carla had a career break for seven months due to clinical risk during pregnancy followed by maternity leave. Currently, Carla is an assistant researcher at the Multidisciplinary Institute of Ageing, University of Coimbra. She has 18 publications in peer-reviewed international journals and conference abstracts: 8 as the first author, 5 as co-author, 5 as the last author, and 2 book chapters; with 532 citations and an h-index of 12 (Google Scholar [14 in Q1 publications and 8 are in top 10%-CiteScore Scopus].
