Ana V.M. Nunes graduated in Chemical Engineering in 2002 and obtained her PhD in Chemical Reaction Engineering in December of 2008 by FCT-NOVA. During PhD, she worked in the field of clean technologies (Extraction/Reaction processes using high-pressure CO2), at the associate laboratory IBET and was part of the SuperGreenChem Network, joining together 15 research groups from 9 European countries. From 2009 to 2011, she worked as a project manager in the field of drug delivery (Formulation/Micronization) at IBET in collaboration with industry. In 2011, she was awarded a post-doc grant (SFRH / BPD / 74994 / 2010) and started on the field of utilization of CO2 as a carbon feedstock for the manufacture of cyclic carbonates. In 2014, she founded with two University colleagues, Zeyton Nutraceuticals, a technology-based start-up to produce natural extracts from olive oil by-products. The technology is based on patents from which she is co-inventor, granted in the USA (US8066881 B2), Europe (EP1910257 B1) and other countries as Canada, Tunisia, Morocco and Brazil. In 2015 she was awarded an Assistant Researcher (5 year) position at LAQV-REQUIMTE in highly competitive FCT/MCTES call. She has published 42 scientific papers (8 as corresponding author) in international peer review journals, 4 book chapters (1 is accepted) and 10 conference proceedings. Furthermore, she has made 38 oral communications (4 invited lectures, 1 invited keynote lecture on the 3rd EuCheMS Congress on Green and Sustainable Chemistry, York 2017). Furthermore, a new topic from which she is co-editor intitled “Current and Emerging Trends in CO2 Utilisation Towards the Global Challenge of Sustainability” has been launch in the journal Frontiers in Sustainability. Between 2017 and 2020 she was involved in several collaboration projects with Zeyton Nutraceuticals (www.zeyton.pt), namely for the development and scale-up of a new separation step. This work culminated with the launch of a new product on the market in 2020 and the construction of a new industrial plant in Alentejo, Portugal, in 2021. Furthermore, during this time, Zeyton Nutraceuticals has contracted two NOVA former students (1 Msc and 1 PhD). An official visit of NOVA Professors and Students to Zeyton Industrial plant was performed in the end of May of 2021. Concerning scientific recognition, she was an invited member of the Jury for 10 Doctoral Thesis Defences (6 outside Portugal). In 2017 she was a visiting researcher at Lancaster University for one month. Furthermore, she was granted Principal Investigator of 4 FCT Research Projects, PTDC/EQUEQU/104552/2008, EXPL/QEQ-ERQ/2243/2013, PTDC/EQU-EPQ/31926/2017 and MIT-EXPL/CS/0052/2021 (started 1/03/2022), which corresponds to a total funding= 500k€ (as PI) awarded by international panels in FCT competitive calls. She has also participated in several research projects as team member. She has been the principal supervisor of 1 PhD thesis (3rd cycle), 12 MsC thesis, three of them as co-supervisor (2nd cycle) and 7 final degree projects (1st cycle). At the moment she is the principal supervisor of one PhD student from the PhD programme in Sustainable Chemistry, one MSc student and the co-supervisor of one PhD student in collaboration with CQE-IST. She also dedicates herself to teaching since 2011 and has given several lectures for 2nd and 3rd cycles mainly related with Sustainable Chemistry, Supercritical CO2 and more recently CO2 Capture and Utilisation. Furthermore, since 2012, she teachs the course of General Chemistry at FCT NOVA, a class of 1st year - 1st semester of approximately 60 Engineering Students with a workload of 5 hours/week (1st cycle-theoretical and practical classes).
