Juan F. García-Moreno is a molecular biologist with eight years of experience in basic and translational cancer research, combining computational approaches and wet lab techniques. He applied for the BioSys Doctoral FCT Programme, joined the Biosystems & Integrative Sciences Institute and was hosted by the National Health Institute Doutor Ricardo Jorge. The PhD began in April 2018 and ended in December 2023, with the distinction of "Approved with Distinction and Honors", and his doctoral work was supervised by the Prof. Luísa Romão and Dr. Paulo Matos. During his doctoral studies at BioISI, his research primarily focused on the role of the ribonuclease DIS3L2 in colorectal cancer and its involvement in the intricate molecular mechanisms underlying gene expression. One of the key findings of his PhD work was the discovery of a novel oncogenic role for DIS3L2 in colorectal cancer (García-Moreno et al., 2023). Analysis of public RNA datasets from The Cancer Genome Atlas revealed that high DIS3L2 expression is associated with worse prognosis in patients with colorectal cancer and its depletion impairs metastasis-associated properties via the mTOR signaling pathway. Furthermore, it was elucidated the involvement of DIS3L2 in the nonsense-mediated mRNA decay pathway (NMD) (da Costa et al., 2019; da Costa et al., 2020). His academic journey, especially in bioinformatics, has also provided him with a strong foundation in data science. He leveraged cutting-edge technologies such as high-throughput RNA sequencing and implemented key computational approaches to properly analyze NMD-inducing genomic features in large sets RNAs. He is proficient in R and Python and has advanced skills in database management using SQL, and in data visualization using tools like Power BI and Tableau. More details on his projects and contributions can be found on his GitHub profile (https://github.com/juanfgm93). During his PhD, he presented his findings at national and international conferences and published seven scientific articles in indexed, peer-reviewed international journals, three of which as first author. He also mentored two master's students that successfully completed their studies. In addition, in 2019, he co-founded the BioISI PhD Student Association at the University of Lisbon, organizing one symposium and monthly seminars. He began his master’s degree in Genetics and Cell Biology in 2016 at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM). His master’s thesis, entitled “Telomere Length, Telomerase Activity, and DAPK1 Gene Expression as Prognostic Markers for Colorectal Cancer”, was conducted in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the School of Pharmacy, UCM. This one-year research project was supervised by Prof. Pilar Iniesta Serrano and Prof. Juan Manuel Vega. He was awarded the 2017 Juan Abelló Award (Real Academia Nacional de Farmacia) for the best master’s thesis in life sciences at the national level. After concluding his master’s degree in 2017, he took part in an Erasmus research program at the Lambe Institute For Translational Research, Galway, Ireland. Under the supervision of Dr. James Brown, he contributed to a project investigating how acetylation regulates genome stability, specifically in response to DNA double-strand breaks in a breast cancer model. In 2011, he began a four-year graduation degree in Biology at the Complutense University of Madrid. The final coursework presented at the end of the degree, entitled: “Preparation and biophysical characterization of nanodiscs”, was carried out at the Center for Biological Research, Madrid, under the supervision of Prof. Germán Rivas. Currently, he is working as a data scientist at Envision Pharma Group in Coimbra, creating comprehensive test plans utilizing data warehouse and data mart. Moreover, he contributes to the development of models for predicting conditions from biomedical data.
