João Gomes-Fonseca graduated and received his M.Sc. in Biomedical Engineering in 2011 from the University of Minho (UM, Portugal). He was an Erasmus Student at KU Leuven (Belgium), working in the Medical Imaging Research Center (MIRC). His dissertation focused on a new approach using ultrasound imaging to reconstruct the rib cage to evaluate patients with pectus excavatum. Thereafter, João worked in academia and industry, developing novel and unique solutions for different fields. In 2021, João Gomes-Fonseca completed his PhD in Applied Health Sciences at the School of Medicine (UM, Portugal), in a collaborative project between the Life and Health Sciences Research Institute (ICVS) and the company iSurgical3D Ltd. (Portugal). His project focused on developing a Surgical Navigation System to safely perform percutaneous renal access. During his career, he has published patents and articles in peer-reviewed journals (including Medical Image Analysis, Medical Physics, European Urology Supplements, Journal of Pediatric Surgery, European Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, & Frequency Control, among others). Moreover, João has also been (co-)author in full proceedings in international conferences and conference abstracts, as well as a referee in international journals and international conferences. João was also co-responsible for the regulatory affairs and the quality management system of iSurgical3D. In addition, he has been an Invited Assistant Professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Cávado and Ave (Portugal) since 2019, with his lectures focusing on Computer Vision and Digital Signal Processing. Since 2021, João has been an Integrated Member of 2Ai - Applied Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, with main interests in medical imaging processing, image-guided interventions, and surgical navigation systems. João also collaborated with the company Complear Health (Braga, Portugal) to develop a solution for eQMS and eTD for Software as Medical Devices. Currently, João is working for DNV as an Auditor and Assessor for active medical devices.
