Vânia Baptista, Junior Researcher at Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR) - University of Algarve (UAlg), and Invited Assistant Professor at UAlg, is graduated in Marine Biology in 2010 at the UAlg. She has obtained an MSc in Marine Sciences, Marine Resources (specialization in Marine Biology and Ecology) at Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences, University of Porto in 2012 and completed her PhD in Marine, Earth and Environmental Sciences (specialization in Marine Ecology) at the UAlg in 2019 (FCT fellowship: SFRH/BD/104209/2014). Her work has been focused on fish larvae behaviour and ecology, and the effects of environmental and climate variability on the recruitment of fish species. During the last years, she also collaborated on other research activities related to various issues: feeding ecology of marine and estuarine species, science-citizen activities, invasive species monitoring, ecophysiological condition of dolphins, sharks and lobsters, monthly sampling of zooplankton in the Guadiana Estuary and Ria Formosa, fisheries and climate change vulnerability. She has participated in 14 research projects (four ongoing), two as Principal Researcher, and one as institutional coordinator. From 2018 to 2022, she was a researcher (Post-Doc since Jan/2020) and interim coordinator in the LuandaWaterFront project, where she co-coordinated the project. Since January 2022, Vânia has been coordinating the LittleFish-STP project, which the main objective is to study the biology and ecology of an endemic and economically exploited fish species in São Tomé Island. Since May 2022, Vânia got a prestigious research position in CCMAR as a Junior Researcher funded by FCT under the "4th Edition of Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus (CCEC)" (DOI:10.54499/2021.00956.CEECIND/CP1678/CT000). In 2024, Vânia awarded the FLAD Scientific Award - Atlantic. Within these positions/projects, Vânia aims to determine the main drivers responsible for the recruitment of fish larvae, their behaviour, dispersion and condition, in temperate and tropical areas. In the last years, Vânia has published 34 peer-reviewed articles, 12 as first, last and corresponding author, with 455 citations (h-index of 15, Scopus on 04/02/2025). She also contributed to three book chapters. She presented her work in international scientific meetings, contributing to several seminars and conference presentations (25 oral communications and seven posters). In her research activity, Vânia was invited as a speaker at the "V Seminary of Postgraduation in Ecology" (Brazil; 2020) and the Advanced Course "Living Oceans & Climate Changes'19 - Ocean Acidification and Biomarine Resources" (PT; 2019). She has been involved as an assistant in bachelor (Invertebrates Biology; Topics in Biology) and master (Fisheries Biology) teaching, and since 2022, as an Invited Assistant Professor, teaching Marine Biology and Biology bachelor courses (Invertebrates Biology; Marine Ecosystems). She has been supervisor/co-supervisor of bachelor students (two), master students for experimental works (seven), master theses (ten; one ongoing), and four PhD candidates (ongoing). Vânia has been a member of the Direction Boards of the Master in Marine Biodiversity, Fisheries and Conservation (since 2023) and Aquaculture and Fisheries (since 2025). She has participated in the peer-revision of scientific articles in 16 scientific journals and was Guest Editor of a Special Issue ("Temperature-Related Biodiversity Change") in Sustainability journal. Vânia was on a jury of 14 master theses (five as the main arguer, two as supervisor, and six as president). Recently, Vânia is a member of the European University of the Sea (SEA-EU) as a representative of UAlg at the Future Leadership Forum.
