I am an internationally recognised plant pathologist and nematologist with over 20 years of experience in research, teaching, and applied science, dedicated to developing innovative and sustainable solutions for the management of plant-parasitic nematodes, with particular emphasis on the pinewood nematode (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus) and forest health. I hold a PhD in Biology/Ecology from the University of Coimbra, awarded with Distinction and Honour, and completed advanced research training at Rothamsted Research (UK). My academic career has been largely developed at the University of Coimbra, where I conducted postdoctoral research and served as an Early Career Researcher at the Centre for Functional Ecology, building a strong interdisciplinary profile. I have established a robust international research profile, supported by 38 peer-reviewed publications in high-impact scientific journals, two book chapters, two field and laboratory guides, relevant contributions to genomic databases, and more than 90 oral and poster presentations at national and international scientific meetings. I have coordinated and co-coordinated competitive nationally funded research projects and participated in EU-funded and nationally funded projects, demonstrating proven leadership in project management and interdisciplinary research. In parallel with academia, I play a leading role in applied nematology and plant health. I coordinate nematology services at the Institute of Environment, Technology and Life (IATV) and act as Scientific Coordinator for Nematology at FITOLAB-IPN, where I am Technical Manager of an ISO/IEC 17025:2018 accredited assay for the morphological and molecular detection of Bursaphelenchus xylophilus in wood samples. My work directly supports national and EU phytosanitary policy, industrial compliance, and forest protection. I have contributed to EPPO technical documentation and to the development of nationally adopted phytosanitary treatment standards. I have established strategic partnerships with Portuguese forestry-based industries and maintain close collaboration with the Directorate-General for Food and Veterinary Affairs (DGAV), including the monitoring of heat treatment of wood packaging material under the ISPM 15 international standard. I contributed to the development of an innovative hot-steam bark treatment, presented to the European Commission, which formed the scientific basis of Portuguese Standard NP 4515:2023. I also conduct nematological analyses for B. xylophilus detection in Portuguese forests, in collaboration with the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF). I am actively engaged in higher education teaching, postgraduate supervision, scientific outreach, and peer review. My future research aims to consolidate international collaborations and to address emerging plant health challenges driven by global environmental change, strengthening the scientific, technical and societal impact of my work.
