I have a Bachelor and Master's degree in Biochemistry from the University of Coimbra (2009 and 2011) and a PhD degree in Biology from the University of Aveiro (2018). My main research interests are nanomaterials/plastics, toxicology, oxidative stress responses, multispecies systems and the development of safer-by-design products. I am currently a post-doctoral researcher at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, in the CARBOGRASS project since January 2024. My research career started with the study of the contributions on epithelial malignant transformation of senescent fibroblasts, induced by hexavalent chromium exposure, reflecting scenarios of occupational exposure in mines and industry. Since 2013 I have focused my research in ecotoxicology, having studied the impact of different nanomaterials to soil invertebrate model organisms in complex scenarios, from simple standardized testing to soil multispecies system testing, at different organizational levels (cellular, individual, population and ecossystem) as the main subject of my PhD degree. My post-doctoral experiences include a fellowship in the LIFE-funded project No_Waste, running ecotoxicological assays with model soil organisms, to assess the recovery process of acidic mine soils amended with innovative formulations based on wastes from the paper pulp industry, a post-doctoral fellowship at the Health and Technology Research Center (H&TRC), where I co-wrote the IDI&CA 2021 funded project PLASCOGEN. More recently (2022-2023) I was a contracted post-doctoral researcher at Universidade de Vigo (Spain), in the H2020 funded LABPLAS project, assessing the degradation of conventional and biodegradable polymers in vermicomposting conditions and the associated toxicity to soil organisms. I have a multidisciplinary background, from HPV screening through Real-Time PCR analysis, oxidative stress biomarker analysis, mammalian cells, bacteria and soil invertebrate species cultures to atomic absorption spectroscopy and soil invertebrate testing, from standard protocols to multigenerational and multispecies designs. With over 90 citations in 10 peer-reviewed papers, 6 as first, one as last author, and one book chapter as sole author, I have published in recognized internationals journals, such as Science of the Total Environment and Environmental Science and Technology. I have participated in several dissemination activities, from international conferences to science fairs (European Researcher's Night 2022), while also developing content for digital events (Ecology Day 2020), social networks and institutional websites. My career has mostly developed through participation as a fellow in national and international funded projects, as well as obtaining a FCT mixed grant to obtain my PhD degree and mobility funds through ALTER-Net. I have pursued international collaborations and have stayed abroad at every stage of my research career: Master (Hôpitaux Universitaire de Genève), PhD (Aarhus Universitet) and Post-Doc (visiting researcher at Wageningen University and Research). The thirst for knowledge has lead me to be very persistent towards my goals, however maintaining an respectful and positive attitude towards colleagues and peers, which have allowed me to builid networks and develop research projects, driving towards a more sustainable future.
