Mariana Silva is a biologist at the Centro de Biologia Molecular e Ambiental (CBMA) at the University of Minho. She focuses on developing sustainable agricultural solutions through plant-microbe interactions. Her academic background includes a master’s degree in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, and Bioentrepreneurship in Plants, as well as a bachelor’s degree in Applied Biology, both obtained from the University of Minho. This strong foundation supports her research. Currently, Mariana's research centers on biocontrol agents, microorganisms that suppress plant diseases, and mycorrhizae symbiotic fungi that are crucial for plant health and nutrient uptake. This work builds on her experience as a Research Fellow in the BactoCast project, where she studies soil microbial dynamics and their influence on mycorrhizal formation in chestnut trees. Her master’s research focused on developing biocontrol strategies against pathogens that affect date palms, demonstrating her ability to apply molecular techniques to address practical agricultural challenges. In addition to her research, Mariana is interested in translating scientific findings into practical applications. Her participation in the "Laboratório de Empresas" entrepreneurship boot camps highlights her potential to contribute to real-world agricultural solutions and reflects her commitment to bridging the gap between biology and business.
