Bsc. in Oceanography (University of Algarve, Portugal), MSc. Water and Coastal Management (Geophysical Institute - Norway), Graduate student in Duke University (US) Integrated Marine Conservation Program, and PhD in Marine Sciences with specialization in Numerical Modelling. My main pursuit has been to apply and develop numerical tools (ocean models and data science) towards extending our understanding of the ocean and coastal processes, optimizing and minimizing the environmental impacts of processes and human activities in coastal areas. With experience working for environmental agencies (Scottish Environmental Protection Agency, NOAA Coastal Services Centre) and research centers (CIMA), I've been involved in several research projects funded at the regional, national, European, and international levels. During the last 5 years my focus has been: (1) Gathering competitive funding, and being involved with international, European, and National consortiums where an excess of 60 M¿ was raised in six projects. (2) Managing, as the institutional PI at Universidade do Algarve, the MIT Portugal flagship project AEROS Constellation. (3) Dynamically working with teams from robotics, AI, and remote sensing, to comprehend their technologies and relate them with my work activities in various projects. (4) Using emergent technologies for observing and understanding the South Iberia oceanography (numerical models, AUVs, Artificial Intelligence, and Remote Sensing). (5) Developing state-of-the-art operational forecasting and data management systems that are at the core of National and International projects. (6) Applying my expertise to tackle key challenges in different fields (Fisheries, Aquaculture, Deep Sea Mining, Oil Pollution Management, and Climate Change). (7) Establishing and working with multidisciplinary collaborative networks in cross-sector industries, integrating needs, and effectively communicating with a wide range of stakeholders. (8) Having roles that require scientific competence and international recognition by my peers (reviewer for International Scientific Journals, external expert for the European Union, teacher/arguer, and supervisor of BSc/MSc students).
