Laura Silva received her PhD in Philosophy from UCL in 2019 (no corrections). She holds an MPhilStud from the same institution (unofficial Distinction), an MA in Philosophy from KCL (Distinction, 2013) and a BSc in Neuroscience from UCL (First Class 2012). Dr. Silva is a Leverhulme Postdoctoral Researcher at the Swiss Center for Affective Sciences, University of Geneva, at the Philosophy group 'Thumos' co-run by Prof. Fabrice Teroni and Prof. Julien Deonna. She has recently been awarded the Canadian Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship (ranked 4th), to be hosted by McGill University and University of Montreal. From 2019-2020 she was a Postdoctoral Researcher on an ERC grant aimed at bridging philosophy, psychology and neuroscience, working with Prof. Bence Nanay at the Center for Philosophical Psychology, University Antwerp. Dr. Silva's doctoral work was funded by a full AHRC doctoral grant, a UCL Cross-disciplinary Award for further training in psychology, and two research exchange grants, hosted at Yale University, working with Prof. Josh Knobe, and the University of Montreal, working with Prof. Christine Tappolet. Dr. Silva was a Research Associate on the AHRC funded project 'Rethinking the Senses: Uniting the Philosophy and Neuroscience of Perception'. The results of Dr. Silva's work have been published in prestigious venues such as Ergo, European Journal of Philosophy, Review of Philosophy and Psychology, Palgrave and Macmillan, and PNAS (over 120 citations). She has an RnR and a further article currently under review at top philosophy journals, and has a number of further articles aimed at similar venues, as well as a monograph, in preparation. Dr. Silva's research has been presented at top venues in her field, including the APA, Joint Session AS, European Society for the Study of Emotions, International Society for Research on the Emotions, as well as at numerous other (peer reviewed) venues. She has also been invited as keynote speaker for a number of flagship events. Dr. Silva was the lead applicant and organizer of the only philosophy pre-conference at the 2019 International Society for Research on Emotions Conference. Dr. Silva has organized numerous other academic events. Dr. Silva acted as Advisory Editor for the Royal Institute of Philosophy's wider audience publication 'The Philosopher's Magazine', and has authored numerous articles in popular media outlets. She has also provided free consultancy services to a London-based women's charity, and has partaken in a collaboration with visual artists as part of further public engagement efforts. As the lead runner of the UCL Philosophy Department Minorities and Philosophy (MAP) chapter, she organized numerous events, and launched a number of initiatives, aimed at addressing issues of inclusion in the discipline as well as at fostering research and public engagement on topics such as race, gender, class and sexuality. Of note, Dr. Silva started the annual public 'Harriet and Helen Memorial Lecture' on MAP-related topics, named after John Stuart Mill's wife and step-daughter for their unacknowledged contributions to his work. Dr. Silva has designed and delivered three courses of her own on the Philosophy of Emotion and Feminist Philosophy. She has been an invited lecturer at the University of Copenhagen and has examined an MA thesis (as well as invited to examine others). She has further experience as a teaching assistant and seminar leader on courses including philosophy of psychology and modern philosophy. Dr. Silva reveices top student feedback as over 90% of students across all courses taught found her overall teaching 'Very Good' or 'Excellent', she was nominated for a university wide Teaching Excellence Award, and was the only UCL Philosophy graduate student hired to supervise an undergraduate dissertation. She has reviewed pieces for various peer-review journals (including Mind and Language, Synthese and Ergo) and a book proposal for Oxford University Press.
