Sara Tedesco is a postdoctoral researcher at IBET, contributing to the Tech4Green PRR project in the Microbiology and Molecular Biology Lab. Her work focuses on testing the efficacy of bioactive compounds derived from bacteria and agro-industrial waste as sustainable biofungicides against plant fungal diseases. She is also engaged in the APPLEDIV Spanish project, supporting metabolomic analysis in apples. Sara earned her first degree in Rural Development Cooperation from the University of Padova, Italy, conducting her thesis on organic grower group certification systems during a year-long study in India. She then moved to Portugal to pursue a second bachelor’s and a master’s in Agronomic Engineering at Instituto Superior de Agronomia, Lisbon, supported by a merit scholarship. Her research career began in 2015 as a fellow at INIAV, where she focused on micropropagating chestnut rootstocks resistant to ink disease. In 2017, she joined the Plants for Life Ph.D. program with a mixed FCT scholarship. Her Ph.D. research centered on grapevine graft (in)compatibility, featuring international collaborations with the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology (MPI-MP) in Germany, where she spent almost half of her Ph.D., and the Centro de Investigación y Tecnología Agroalimentaria de Aragón (CITA) in Spain. Her work utilized advanced techniques, including in vitro micrografting, phenotyping, metabolomics, molecular testing, histology, and virus silencing via dsRNA. In 2023, Sara joined InnovPlantProtect, contributing to the Vertical Algae PRR project, where she tested the efficacy of biostimulant and biocontrol compounds derived from algae waste, further solidifying her expertise in plant protection. Sara has authored 8 peer-reviewed publications (4 as first author), 4 conference papers, and participated with over 10 works at national and international congresses. She has also served as a jury member for an international Ph.D. defense in Spain and reviewed several academic papers on grafting and graft incompatibility.
