João Pedro Rico de Oliveira Vinagre, completed his PhD in June 2016 and is an Assistant Researcher with a FCT CEEC contract (2023) at the Cancer, Signalling and Metabolism group in i3S and Ipatimup. His top publications addressed mainly the role of telomerase promoter (TERTp) mutations in cancer, their role as a genetic predictor for patients outcome, in improving patient care and validation of a genetic test, Uromonitor. The impact of his research can be ascertained by his metrics. He holds an H-index of 24 with >50 publications mostly in Q1 quartile journals, being first author (or eq. contributor) in 11. He published with 238 co-authors, from several countries and integrated in several international collaborations. He wrote chapter on a book addressing telomerase in cancer. He gives frequent talks in several national and international events (>35). He received several awards and honours (>15) based on his research studies, including best-published article by a Portuguese researcher, Pulido Valente Award. He is a review editor in molecular biosciences (Frontiers) and an ad-hoc reviewer in other publications (Scientific Reports, International Journal of Cancer, Epigenetics, Cancer genetics and others. He serves as a consultant in Ipatimup Diagnostics since 2012 for endocrine hereditary syndromes. He is an Affiliated Professor of the Medical Faculty of the University of Porto, and participates as a teacher in courses, workshops, and in post-graduation courses, such as GABBA (ICBAS/FMUP), Medicine and Oncology (FMUP), and Molecular Pathology (ICBAS) programme since 2017 and in 7 disciplines/modules. He currently supervises, 3 fellows, 2 MSc and 2 PhD student and three Postdocs. He supervised a PhD (FCT, completed), 4 completed MSc and 2 concluded medical internships students. He currently mentors 1 initiation students but in the past, he has mentored 4 MSc students and >10 initiation students. He participated in thesis juries as an examiner (4 PhD and 5 MSc) and as a supervisor (2 MSc and 1 PhD). He supervises/ed Post-Doc students (3, 1 ongoing) in U-Monitor. At a research level, as a PI, he secure 250K with the project CTRL+ALT+CEL (PTDC/MED-ONC/0531/2021), and 325K with the PRR project " Agenda ILLIANCE n.° C644919832-00000035); and, he is currently a PI in also 3 other projects funded from Portuguese Society of Endocrinology and Porto Comprehensive Cancer Center (around 30K). At an enterprise level with U-Monitor team, two competitive funding calls: Auto-Covid (NORTE-01-02B7-FEDER-048957, 52K ) for developing non-invasive Sars-Cov2 testing tools and Stroke-Sensor (NORTE-01-0247-FEDER-047043, 340K) for diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in stroke were obtained. As a team member, he participates/ed in more than 10 projects, e.g., Advancing cancer research: from basic knowledge to application (NORTE2020: 6.4M funding) and Cancel Stem (COMPETE2020: 2.5M) that have prepared him for project management and goal completion. He received 17 awards/honors. He is a frequent participant in sessions for population literacy and has been able to frequently (>20) disseminate his research findings through several media appearances (interviews, TV, newspapers, magazines, websites).
