Esther Udina (PhD in Medicine) is one of the principal investigators of the group of Neuroplasticity and regeneration, coordinated by Xavier Navarro. EU has been working on peripheral nerve injury in experimental models, since her PhD thesis (2004). One of her present interests focuses on strategies to improve functional recovery in peripheral nerve injury models, focusing on specific regeneration to successfully reinnervate adequate target organs. She has participated as principal investigator in 5 projects, and collaborated in another 14 projects. She has published over 68 papers in refereed journals (H-index 32) and directed 8 PhD theses. The relevant scientific techniques and skills acquired are: (i) Management of animal models (mouse and mice); (ii) Microsurgery of the peripheral nervous system; (iii) Electrophysiological techniques for evaluation of peripheral sensory and motor innervation, spinal reflex and central conductions; (iv) Neurophysiological methods to evaluate nociception, sympathetic sudomotor and motor functions; (v) Neural activity recordings using different interphases (regenerative electrodes, cuffs, microneedles); (vi) Ultramicrotom and Electron microscope manage; (vii) Histological methods for morphology and morphometry of myelinated fibers and to study and quantity unmyelinated fibers; (viii) Immunohistochemical techniques for quantification of axon regeneration and reinnervation; (ix) Backlabeling of peripheral fibers to assess peripheral and central axon regeneration; (x) Primary cell culture of Schwann cells and olfactory ensheathing glia; (xi) Primary cell cutures of DRG neurons of adult rats; (xii) Paired motor unit recordings in humans by intramuscular electrodes.
