Manuel José Magalhães Gomes Mota, chemical engineer (1972), received the PhD at INSA Toulouse, Department de Genie Biochimique et Alimentaire (1985). Was one of the pioneers in launching the Department and Center of Biological engineering at the University of Minho. Manuel Mota had a pivotal role in establishing research lines at CEB, that place UMinho today in the international panorama of avant-garde research in several areas of biotechnology and bioengineering. After working 6 year at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Engineering Faculty of Oporto University, he moved to UMInho where he was promoted to full professor in 1994. Vice-Rector of UMinho between 2002 and 2009, he retired in 2012 and was appointed as Emeritus Professor in 2013. Director of CEB-UM between 2002-2012; Deputy Dean of the School of Engineering, Univ Minho, 1996-2000. Head of the Dep of Biological Engineering, Univ Minho, 1994-1996.
