Vitor Hugo Pessoa Oliveira obtained his degree in Marine Sciences (2016) from the University of Aveiro (UA). He continued at UA for the MsC in Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (completed in 2018). During his academic career, he prepared 3 scientific articles based on his theses (all published in international journals) and a book chapter for the Encyclopedia of the UN Sustainable Development Goals - Life Below Water, being in all of them the first author. In addition to the above, his master's work was published at the XVI Aquaculture Seminar (in Portugal). In 2019, he received a master's research grant (project Remedigrass - PTDC/CTA-AMB/29647/2017), in which he continued to work until starting his doctorate in 2021. In addition to publishing articles in international journals, he has participated as a speaker at national and international conferences. The main focus of research throughout his career has been marine/estuarine ecology and the influence of human pressures in transitional aquatic ecosystems. He started with environmental monitoring (analysis of contaminants in sediments and water column) and then deepened his knowledge in the area of numerical modeling. This allowed him to have an extensive and deep experience working on estuarine and coastal models applied to different locations, always with the objective of integrating different estuarine processes and scientific areas (e.g.: mixing and transport processes and physical and biochemical interactions), as well as doing studies of impacts of climate change. In addition, through the Remedigrass research grant, he acquired knowledge in the area of rehabilitation of historically contaminated ecosystems and environmental management in aquatic ecosystems, targeting a more sustainable use of the biological resources.
