Vitor Hugo Pessoa Oliveira has a bachelor’s degree in Marine Sciences from the University of Aveiro (UA), as well as a MsC in Marine and Atmospheric Sciences. In 2019, he obtained a master's research grant from the Remedigrass project (PTDC/CTA-AMB/29647/2017) and remained engaged in this project until the initiation of his ongoing PhD in 2021. His research field focus mainly in marine/estuarine ecology and the impact of human pressures in transitional aquatic ecosystems. Initially, he engaged in environmental monitoring, conducting analyses of contaminants in sediments and in the water column. Subsequently, he delved deeper into numerical modeling, allowing him to have an extensive and deep experience working on estuarine and coastal models applied to different locations/ecosystems. Through this, he achieved numerical integration of various estuarine processes and scientific domains, encompassing physical, biological, and chemical interactions. Additionally, he conducted studies investigating the impacts of climate change within these areas of interest. Furthermore, his involvement in the Remedigrass research grant expanded his knowledge base, specifically in the rehabilitation of historically contaminated ecosystems and the implementation of environmental management strategies in aquatic environments. His efforts were dedicated to fostering a more sustainable utilization of biological resources in these ecosystems. During his doctorate, he integrated all these concepts and successfully conducted a transplantation of Zostera noltei in a historically contaminated area. Throughout this period, he had the opportunity to analyze the biochemical and physiological responses of this plant, as well as the geochemical changes these plants can induce in contaminated ecosystems. Additionally, he investigated whether there were ecological improvements at the community levels with the implementation of these seagrass beds. Throughout his academic and research career, Vitor has contributed to 8 scientific articles, acting as the lead author in 5 of them, all published in prestigious international journals. Furthermore, he made a significant contribution as the first author of a book chapter for the Encyclopedia of the UN Sustainable Development Goals - Life Below Water. Beyond his publications, Vitor has disseminated his research findings by presenting as a speaker at numerous national and international conferences.
