Paulo Menezes, PhD, is with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Coimbra. He is currently subdirector on this department responsible for the external relations and communication. As a lecturer he is responsible for the courses on Computer Architecture, Computer Graphics and Augmented Reality, and Interactive Systems and Robotics. He is a senior researcher at the Institute of Systems and Robotics, and the head of the Immersive Systems and Sensorial Stimulation Laboratory that develops activities in areas such as Machine Learning, Affective Computing, Human-Robot Interaction, Virtual and Augmented Reality and Human Behaviour Analysis. He has participated in several National and European projects and is currently involved as PI for the University of Coimbra in the following national projects: Activas - Environments Built for an active, safe, and healthy life; A4A - Audiology for All; and "O Eu e o Nós das Emoções". He also participates as an expert for HMI in Polibot, Ultrabot projects. At the European level he has been involved in eleven projects as core researcher, and as PI (2) or as team coordinator (3), in particular in the areas of social robots, human behaviour analysis, assistive systems. Currently on the two active projects is the responsible for the Interaction WP on the H2020 RISE Lifebots Exchange project and the principal investigator at the University of Coimbra for the SEEDS project. Published 23 articles in journals. Has 6 section(s) of books and 13 book(s). He has been co-advising 9 PhD theses in the area of machine learning, behaviour analysis, affective and interactive systems, and Science+Technology+Arts, Virtual and Augmented Reality and Human-Robot/Machine Interaction, where 3 of them are concluded. Has received 7 awards and/or honors. He maintains collaborations with researchers from international institutions like Univ. Jaume I, Castellon de la Plana, Spain; ISIR-UPMC, Paris, France; Institut de la Vision, Paris France; LAAS-CNRS Toulouse, France; CXI ¿ Technical University of Liberec, Czech Republic, Universidad Veracuzana, Xalapa, Mexico; Khalifa University, Abu Dhabi, among others.
