My main scientific contributions focus on the field of use and valorisation of agro-industrial waste and/or secondary streams to obtain products of industrial interest and high added value. I have developed chemical and biotechnological processes for the valorisation of different types of lignocellulosic materials as well as residual or secondary streams of different processes in the wine, brewing and corn processing industry. In most cases, my scientific contribution is not limited to developing a chemical or biotechnological process for obtaining / extracting the consequent metabolite or compound of interest (antioxidants and antimicrobials, carotenoids, xylitol, surfactants, etc.), but also product separation and purification processes have been carried out, as well as the search and validation of the possible commercial applications that these products may have. Regarding my capacity to training young researchers, in the last 10 years I have supervised 8 PhD Theses, all these doctors are working in important companies (CUPA GROUP; CEAMSA) or development their researcher career nowadays under very competitive research programs like one doctor in the “Juan the la Cierva” program and two doctors that are PIs of two projects from the national JIN program. All the Thesis defended by the PhD students were endorsed by at least 6 publications of the JCR an in some cases by various patents. I have participated in over 40 research projects (16 regional, 8 national, 1 CENIT project of the CDTI, 1 European project from the 7th Framework Programme and 15 contracts or agreement with companies or public centres). I have been the PI in 16 research projects: 2 national projects, 3 regional projects, 4 regional group consolidation projects, 1 national project from the “Ramón y Cajal” programme, 1 CENIT project, 1 INNPACTO Programme, 2 agreements with public research centres and 2 contracts with international companies. I have published during my research career 138 articles in JCR journals (85 in the last 10 years), of which 78 are first-quartile SCI articles (Q1) and 37 are second-quartile SCI articles (Q2) of the JCR epigraph. I have an h-index of 41. I have co-authored 8 patents and published 11 book chapters, presented over 180 communications at congresses. I have 4 six-year research periods and 1 six-year transfer periods recognised. I have been a member of selection committees for National Plan research projects, and I am a regular assessor for ANEP. I have been Head of the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Vigo since 04/11/2015 up to the present.
