Dr. Ricardo Oliveira is a distinguished researcher, having earned his Ph.D. in Physics Engineering from the University of Aveiro, Portugal, in September 2017, and a Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Coimbra, Portugal, in 2010. Throughout his dynamic career, Dr. Oliveira has contributed significantly to 17 diverse projects, demonstrating his expertise in fiber optic related technologies. In the last five years alone, he participated in 13 projects, including nine national, two European, and two international, totalizing an impressive 6.7 MEuros in funding. His work focuses on sensors, devices, telecommunications, and additive manufacturing. Presently, Dr. Oliveira holds the position of Researcher at the Instituto de Telecomunicações, Aveiro. He is the Principal Investigator for a nationally-funded project (PTDC/EEI-TEL/1511/2020) focused on developing innovative devices based on spirally twisted polymer fibers. His remarkable achievements recently secured him a top-tier researcher contract from the National Stimulus of Scientific Employment (CEEC 4th edition) by the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, Portugal. Dr. Oliveira has played pivotal roles in various national and international project applications, securing financial support as a team member (HiPOF; AQUATICsens; MCTechs; sWAT, ELVIS, GRASPon, PTDC/101726/2008, AM-OPTICAL, GRASS-LIGHT, MAR2PROTECT, ALERT-PFAS), co-PI (BioPlus (Internal IT), DiaPro (Air Force Research Laboratory)) and, as PI (FOPE-ComSens (FCT), TwistedPOF (FCT - CEEC) and Multisource3DCombiner (MEGARAY LLC)). In the last 5 years, he participated as a Postdoctoral Fellow in 1 project, Research Fellow in 2 projects, Researcher in 5, co-PI in 2, and PI in 3 projects. In the realm of academia, Dr. Oliveira has been instrumental in teaching Applied Optics and Electronics at the Physics department of the University of Aveiro since 2018. His research contributions are evidenced by 30 journal papers cited in SCI (20 Q1 (1 invited), and 9 Q2), 15 of which were published in the last five years, and 35 papers in international conference proceedings, from which 5 have been invited. Additionally, he is first author of a T&F book (2019) and 1st author in two book chapters (1 Springer, 1 T&F), establishing himself as a key figure in the field. Dr. Oliveira's innovative work has been showcased in national exhibition stands. Due to the innovative work, Ricardo is currently working on the preparation of a provisional patent application regarding the topics of fiber optic sensors through space division multiplexing using multicore optical fibers. As a testament to his commitment to advancing scientific knowledge, Dr. Oliveira has actively participated in international conferences as a committee and TPC member. His expertise is further acknowledged through peer review activities, where he has reviewed over 200 journal papers in high-impact journals (Nature, Optica, IEEE, Elsevier), earning awards for the quality of his reviews. Currently, he is a Journal Topic Editor of Sensors, a member of the Portuguese Optical Society for Optics and Photonics and an Optica member member. His dedication to mentorship is evident in his supervision of 22 students over the last five years, a remarkable achievement considering he has six years after the Ph.D. Among the supervisions, 10 of them are still running (3 Ph.D, 3 MSc and 4 BSc). Additionally, he is currently supervising 1 MSc and 2 Ph.D. researchers, further contributing to the development of the next generation of scientists. Dr. Oliveira has collaborated with 137 peers globally, fostering international knowledge exchange and expanding his expertise in areas such as femtosecond laser inscription in Curitiba, Brazil, and fiber optic fabrication in Campinas, Brazil. With a total of 760 citations, 556 of which are in the last five years according to Google Scholar, Dr. Oliveira's influence in the field is profound.
