JOÃO CASTELHANO (JC) holds a Master's in Biomedical Engineering (2008) and earned a Ph.D. in health sciences (biomedical sciences) in 2015 from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra (UC). Currently a Researcher at CIBIT/ICNAS, UC, JC boasts a rich research history since 2007, specializing in medical imaging and radiation with a focus on Multimodal Imaging and Signal Processing. His extensive experience spans translational research, from basic to clinical applications, showcasing his proficiency in multitasking and collaborative work. His primary research interests encompass neuroscience, multimodal medical imaging, translational research, and the development of new imaging biomarkers, alongside expertise in data analysis, including Big Data and innovative brain stimulation treatment approaches. JC's skill set extends to project and lab management, experimental design, and the acquisition and analysis of data from various modalities such as EEG, fMRI, MRS, PET, TMS, ECoG, and fNIRS. His international exposure includes data acquisition in two foreign research centers, specializing in MagnetoEncephalography (MEG) in Frankfurt and 7T MRI in Maastricht. Additionally, he excels in signal processing of pre-clinical MRI datasets, covering perfusion, diffusion, and spectroscopy in multiple organs and animal models. With 11 original research works as the first author and a book chapter, JC has significantly contributed to the field. As a co-author, he collaborated on 50 papers in the last 5 years, with notable recognition such as the Best Paper award for the FMUC 2014 and the selection for the cover of the Human Brain Mapping (HBM) Journal. His recent 2021 Frontiers paper ranks in the top 5% of all research outputs by Altmetric, and a review in Fibromyalgia is published in Nature Reviews Rheumatology (IF: 20). JC's scholarly impact is evident in an H-index of 18, with a continuous increase in citations. He actively contributes to education, having taught and supervised students at various academic levels (BSc, MSc, PhD). JC is instrumental in science communication and dissemination, serving as a Guest Editor for two journals and reviewing 30+ papers last years. Currently involved in three institutional projects—CIBIT, CIBB, and LASI—with a cumulative funding exceeding 8 million euros JC's collaborations extend beyond national borders, encompassing renowned institutions such as Milano Hospital, Maastricht University, and the University of Chile. Moreover, In 2022, JC assumed the role of administrator for the Brain Imaging Network (BIN) node of Euro-Bioimaging, showcasing his commitment to advancing cutting-edge imaging technologies at the international level. JC evaluative roles in prestigious funding organizations such as Chile Science Foundation and EU Widera funding calls, establishes him as an influential figure in advancing scientific excellence. In addition to his research endeavors, JC leads the implementation of a radiology information system, facilitating the institute's transition to a fully digital work environment, thus reducing costs and increasing team productivity. He plays a vital role in project and lab management, recruitment, and human resources calls, and oversees the digital platforms of the institute. A key team member in diverse research projects, JC secured seed funding (€10k) to lead a neuroimaging project and is actively involved in four research projects (two as Co-PI). His proactive approach extends to science communication and dissemination, with a remarkable record as Editor and reviewer. Overall, JC's dynamic and impactful contributions make him a valuable member to both the scientific and academic communities.
