I am an early career team leader at the ICVS, School of Medicine/University of Minho. I hold a BSc in Biology, and an MSc in Molecular Genetics. I did my PhD training in Dr. Ioannis Sotiropoulos and Prof. Nuno Sousa's Lab where I studied how stress impacts Tau degradation mechanisms showing that chronic stress and high GCs inhibit the autophagy and dysregulate RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) homeostasis leading Tau pathology and downstream memory loss (Silva JM et al., Cell DD 2019). In addition, I also introduced a novel mechanism of GC-driven synaptic degeneration via synaptic missorting of Tau and glutamatergic excitotoxic signaling (Pinheiro S*, Silva J* et al., 2015 Mol Neurob). In parallel to studying Tau pathology, I also focused my Ph.D. studies on understanding Tau function in the brain. I identified a novel role of Tau on epigenetic homeostasis showing that loss of Tau triggers neuronal malfunction/atrophy through the dysregulation of nuclear epigenetic mechanisms (Silva JM, et al 2024, under revision in Nature Neuroscience). In parallel to my Ph.D. work, I also participated in other studies analyzing Tau-related brain damage by stress (e.g. Dioli et al., Mol Psych 2017, Vaz-Silva J et al., EMBO 2018). Next, obtaining my funding and post-doc fellowship from Canon Foundation (2018), I extended my international training by working at the lab of Prof Takashima (Imperial University, Japan), a well-known expert in the field of Tau biology, where I further monitored different parameters of Tau role in nucleus related to RBPs. I returned to ICVS as an Assistant Researcher in the Brain Circuits and Neuron-glia Adaptations Team (CEEC Individual 2022). I am now a Research Assistant developing my research line on understanding the role of RNA metabolism and the pathological load of RNA granules in stress-driven brain pathologies such as AD, depression, and Down Syndrome. I actively supervise students from different levels ( 1 Ph.D. candidate, 4 MSc students, and undergrad). I've recently received National funding for the research project "Novel methods for blood biomarker detection for AD", in collaboration with C2A and INL, and FCT Contract for Junior Researcher 2021.00204.CEECCIND, to start my Lab, focusing on the Unique biology of RNA-granules in vulnerability and treatment of brain pathologies, awarded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science, highly competitive with an 8% approval rate. My publication list includes high-impact factor publications.
