José Melo-Ferreira completed his PhD in Biology on December 2008 at the University of Porto in collaboration with the U. Montpellier, where he developed most of the dissertation. Since 2009 he was an FCT post-doctoral fellow in CIBIO-InBIO (2009-2015), then Auxiliary Researcher (2015-2022) and Principal Researcher (2022-2024) in the same institution. He is Assitant Professor at the Faculty of Sciences, U. Porto, and since 2018 he leads the EVOCHANGE (Genomics of Evolutionary Change) research group at CIBIO-InBIO-BIOPOLIS, U. Porto. He is involved in The European Reference Genome Atlas (ERGA) as Council (elected) and Steering Committee (data analysis) member, and was executive coordinator of an institutional cooperation with two Research Units from the University of Montpellier. He is member of the Executive Board of the Biodiversity Genomics Europe consortium. His research is focused on evolutionary genomics, using high throughput sequencing data to tackle relevant evolutionary and conservation questions, such as the impact of climate chage on adaptive traits and the potential for future adaptation, the nature of hybridization and introgression, the underpinnings of biological invasions, or the use of genomics in biodiversity conservation toolkits, among others. He maintains close international collaborations, most notably with the University of Montpellier (France), U. Montana (USA), Polish Academy of Sciences (Poland) and the Swedish Museum of Natural History (Sweden). He has been awarded 6 research projects as Principal Investigator and 1 as co-Principal Investigator funded by FCT, is coordinating one work package and several tasks of an EU funded grant, and led four Portugal-France transnational cooperation projects (>2M euros attracted in competitive calls). He supervised 5 Post-Docs, 10 PhD, 15 MSc and 10 undergraduate students (including ongoing supervisions), and participated in several PhD and MSc examination panels. He authored 68 papers in international peer-reviewed journals, 8 pre-prints and 4 book chapters. His publications were cited 2548 times (SCI data), resulting in a current SCI h-index of 28 (4216 citations and h-index of 33 from Google Scholar). The vast majority of his papers were published in high-rank journals (first quartile), such as Science (3), Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA, Genome Biology, Systematic Biology (2), Molecular Biology and Evolution (2), Trends in Ecology and Evolution, Trends in Genetics, Biological Reviews, Current Biology, Molecular Ecology (10), PLoS Genetics (2), Heredity (3), Genome Biology and Evolution (2), Journal of Biogeography (4), among others (mean impact factor per paper >7). He participated in numerous international conferences, authoring a total of 142 communications, and gave 16 invited seminars in multiple international institutions and events. He reviewed papers (for 30 different journals), project grants (Swedish, Belgian, Polish, Croatian and Czech agencies) and PhD dissertations. He teaches diverse curriculat units in the topics of evolution, population genetics and cell biology at the Faculty of Sciences University of Porto. He has been engaged in science dissemination being part of the committee that created the CIBIO weekly seminars (2010-2016), participated in the organization/scientific committee of 11 international conferences, and organizes the ERGA Analysis and Application seminars. He has been active in outreach and science education activities, giving several lectures to the general public, participating in media interviews and producing outreach materials about his research and evolution.
