Catarina L. Carvalho has a PhD in Psychology, specialization in Social Psychology, a master degree in Social Psychology, a postgraduate degree in Humanitarian Action, Cooperation and Development and a degree in Social Education. Currently, Catarina is an invited assistant professor at the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences of the University of Porto, former postdoctoral researcher at the project "VigilHate - VIGILANT CITIZENS AGAINST HATE - How to counter bystander apathy and increase citizens' commitment against online hate speech?", funded by La Caixa Foundation and the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). Her main research interests focus on civic and political participation, civic empowerment, social movements, collective action vs. social apathy, reaction to deviance in intergroup contexts, and the psychological mechanisms associated with individuals' support for group-based social hierarchy and inequality. Currently, she is also working on adherence to nationalism and populist radical right, discrimination against immigrants, refugees, and other minority groups, and on the psychological mechanisms underlying hate crimes, with a particular focus on online hate speech. Catarina has also a wide experience in quantitative methodologies with focus on experimental research designs. Additionally, Catarina has a broad work experience with vulnerable people and social groups, in situations, or at risk, of poverty and/or social exclusion.
