Oleksandr Tkach graduated in Microelectronics and Semiconductor Devices by the National Technical University of Ukraine “Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” in 1999, investigating nanocrystalline silicon for optoelectronic applications. In 2005 he received PhD degree in Materials Science & Engineering from the University of Aveiro, Portugal, studying strontium titanate-based ceramics for tunable device applications under a personal PhD grant by Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). Completion of PhD was followed by an award of Marie Curie Experienced Research position at the University of Barcelona. However, being Ukrainian but not supported in obtaining a Spanish work visa, Dr. Tkach had to return to Aveiro for 1.5 years as a post-doctoral fellow in multiferroic research, participating in EU FP6 STREP project MULTICERAL and European Network of Excellence FAME and contributing to 2 invited talks. In 2007 Dr. Tkach won a personal post-doctoral grant by FCT to work on alkali tantalates and other perovskite ceramics and thin films at the University of Porto, contributing to 2 FCT R&D projects and to awarded poster done within bilateral Portugal/Germany project. In 2012, he received a researcher contract at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, Germany, within EU FP7 project IFOX and ERC project MASPIC, investigating artificial multiferroic heterostructures and contributing to the photoemission-electron-microscopy synchrotron beam-times. --- In 2014 Dr. Tkach was promoted to FCT Assistant Researcher position at the University of Aveiro, CICECO, coordinating FCT Independent Researcher project in 2014-2019. Within this project, 2 post-doc fellows were hired with Dr. Tkach as a solely supervisor for them as well as for 1 Master student. There are also 8 Master and 1 post-doc co-supervisions by Dr. Tkach. Besides being the project PI, Dr. Tkach participated in COST action TO-BE, starting to publish book chapters, contribute to the organization of scientific events, and to give invited talks. Since 2015, he gave 14 and contributed to more 6 invited or keynote talks and 1 awarded poster; was an organization or scientific committee member of 6 events; edited a book published by Nova Science Publishers; joined Editorial boards of 5 scientific journals, also reviewing manuscripts for >50 journals. Dr. Tkach participated in more 3 FCT R&D projects BioMEMs, FLEXIDEVICE and PIEZOFLEX, 2 projects with industry SGH and AM4SP, and 4 COST actions since 2018. Having not funded but highly evaluated by FCT project proposal in 2022, Dr. Tkach is also awarded by internal CICECO project as a PI, renewing at the same 2022 the FCT Assistant Researcher position and winning FCT Principal Researcher position to be started in 2024 at the University of Aveiro. In overall, Dr. Tkach participated in 3 European, 8 Portuguese FCT and 2 projects with industry as well as 2 bilateral projects with aggregate amount over 48 M€. --- Dr. Tkach publication profile contains 1 edited book, 8 book chapters and 111 articles. Of his 44 publications in the areal top quartile JCR SCI journals, 22 articles are published in the in the top 5 journals of their areas. Five articles by Dr. Tkach were highlighted as the feature or editor choice or hot papers, and two were selected for reproduction in book “100 Years of Ferroelectricity 1921 – 2021” by World Scientific. Dr. Tkach is first author, lead writer, and principal contributor on 49/4 and corresponding author on 36/4 papers/chapters.

The Front Cover shows a flexible functional biocomposite film composed of chitosan biopolymer and BaTiO3 particles, which was prepared by environmentally benign methodologies. This film is flexible, and its elasticity can be tailored by the addition of BaTiO3 particles.
