Fangyuan Zheng

Embarking on a journey that seamlessly blends innovation with sustainability, Fangyuan Zheng's academic odyssey commenced with her graduation in Chemical Engineering in 2014 from the prestigious University of the Basque Country (EHU). Her degree thesis delved into the intricate effects of NaOH concentration onthe desilication process of zeolite HY, pivotal for enhancing the efficiency of Pt/HY catalysts in thehydrocracking of polystyrene. In 2016, Zheng's pursuit of excellence led her to attain a master's degree in Chemical Engineering from EHU. She further strengthened her expertise in environmental engineering through the design of innovative water treatment plants in collaboration with SENER Ingeniería y Sistemas during the master thesis. In parallel, she participated in several international engineering projects in the Environment and Renewable Energy sector, gaining valuable experience in translating engineering concepts into practical and industrial solutions. In 2019, she carried out doctoral thesis at BCMaterials and EHU by a pre-doctoral fellowship from EHU. During the PhD, Dr. Zheng addressed two of the major barriers preventing photocatalysis from industrial implementation: limited solar-light efficiency and photocatalyst reusability. She developed hybrid photocatalytic nanomaterials and nanocomposite membranes for the degradation of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs). Building on this expertise, she was awarded a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship and started new research line in 2025 at the University of Minho. Currently, her research is focused on hybrid treatment technologies for PFAS remediation in contaminated water. To date, she has published nine peer-reviewed articles in Q1 journals, including four as first author and one as first and corresponding author, accumulating over 170 citations (h-index 7). She has actively disseminated her research through presentations at international and national conferences. Her research has received institutional dissemination through the University of Minho and regional media, reflecting its societal relevance in sustainable water treatment. Beyond research, Dr. Zheng actively contributes to the scientific community through peer review for international journals, serving as Guest Editor for an international Special Issue, participating in scientific committees for international conferences, and supervising young researchers. Her future objective is to establish an internationally recognised research programme integrating multifunctional materials, 3D printing and environmental engineering to develop sustainable solutions for emerging contaminants while advancing the fundamental understanding of material–pollutant interactions in real-water matrix.
