Fábio Emanuel Lopes de Matos

Fábio L. Matos is a Marine Ecologist and Auxiliary Researcher at the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM) at the University of Aveiro, Portugal. His work focuses on the integration of spatial analysis and ecological modeling with marine conservation and management. Fábio earned his PhD in Biology and Ecology of Global Change in 2018 from the University of Aveiro, in association with the University of Lisbon. His doctoral research integrated ecological niche modeling, biophysical simulations, network analysis and seascape ecology. This work provided empirical knowledge to support robust marine spatial planning and ecosystem-based management strategies. Since then, he has held positions across academia and the NGO sector, cultivating a multidisciplinary approach to marine research and conservation. Fábio holds leadership and technical roles in national and European projects. He is the Principal Investigator of the AURORA project, which aims to mobilize deep-sea biodiversity data for EMODnet Biology, directly supporting the EU Digital Twin Ocean. He also serves as an active team member for the EU-funded projects GES4SEAS, REDRESS, and BioProtect, which focus on achieving good environmental status and advancing the conservation and restoration of marine biodiversity across European seas. Fábio maintains an extensive international network through active involvement in research groups, a COST Action network and students’ supervision, resulting in a diverse range of collaborative outputs. Within the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), he co-leads a Terms of Reference for the Working Group on Cephalopod Fisheries and Life History (WGCEPHS). In this role, he leads the modelling efforts to estimate climate-driven distribution shifts in cephalopods, supporting fisheries management. His work has contributed to evidence-based policy documentation for the United Nations, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and the International Whaling Commission (IWC) (https://tinyurl.com/4pj9n566). Fábio has authored peer-reviewed papers, book chapters, technical reports, and open-access datasets. He also has an interest in data visualisation, developing interactive applications that translate complex data into functional tools for both research and decision-making. His contributions also extend to mentorship, having supervised and co-supervised researchers at the BSc, MSc, and Postdoctoral levels and serves as a peer reviewer for several international journals.
