Carla Nunes is an Assistant Professor at Vasco da Gama University School (EUVG) and also an Invited Assistant Professor on a part-time basis at FFUC. Additionally, she is a researcher at the Center for Neurosciences and Cell Biology (CNC), University of Coimbra. Carla has a degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences (1998), having received the award of the best student, a MsC degree in Cell Biology (2003) and a Ph.D. in Pharmacy, specializing of Biochemistry (2008), all from the University of Coimbra, Portugal. Throughout her career, Carla's research has been centered on unraveling and modulating dysfunctional molecular mechanisms associated with chronic diseases. Notably, during her Ph.D., she made a groundbreaking discovery by demonstrating that mitochondrial dysfunction induced by the combined action of Nitric Oxide and DOPAC may play a significant role in the neurodegeneration observed in Parkinson's disease. Following a four-year hiatus in her scientific pursuits (2006-2009), Carla obtained a highly competitive FCT postdoctoral fellowship, marking her reentry into academia. She started a new research line within the "Redox Biology in Health and Disease" group of the CNC, dedicated to exploring the molecular mechanisms underlying the anti-inflammatory effects of dietary polyphenols. Concurrently, she engaged in teaching activities at FFUC courses (2011-2014). Following the conclusion of her postdoctoral in 2015, Carla accepted a precarious position as an Invited Assistant Professor. In December 2019, Carla obtained a post-doctoral fellowship from the University of Coimbra, under the HealthyAging2020 project, focusing on studying the impact of diet in preventing cognitive deficits associated with neurodegeneration. Between September 2021 and July 2022, she was contracted as a researcher under the project "Monitoring neurometabolic markers in vivo using microelectrode-based biosensors." In this context, her work focused on the development of biosensors for monitoring various metabolites, namely glucose, lactate, and pyruvate, in biological samples and in vivo. This work resulted in the development of an innovative biosensor for lactate measurement, particularly in plasma, whose patent application is currently pending. Throughout her years of work, she has been involved in guiding, training, and mentoring undergraduate and master’s students. Notably, she has officially supervised 12 MSc dissertations, co-supervised 1 and supervised the scientific project leading to the completion of a Biochemistry degree. Currently, she supervised 2 MSc dissertation and the laboratory work of a master student within the curriculum of Integrated Veterinary Practice II. Furthermore, she is actively mentoring 6 students enrolled in Integrated Veterinary Practice I and II. She participated as a researcher and team member in 13 funded projects. Presently, she is deeply engaged in the international Project “MicroMundo”. Despite encountering some interruptions in her scientific journey, Carla Nunes published 16 conference abstracts, 1 book chapter and a total of 20 papers, including 15 Original Contributions and 5 Reviews, with 11 papers as the first author. Of these, 8 papers are in Q1 of their respective research areas, with 1 in the top 10% and 4 in the top 20%. Additionally, 4 of her papers have been featured among the most cited/downloaded articles, and 2 papers were accepted without requiring revisions. Her primary research areas encompass Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Food Science Technology and Pharmacology/Pharmacy. Furthermore, Carla has contributed 2 papers to magazines targeting general readerships. In their professional activities interacted with 74 collaborator(s) co-authorship of scientific papers. She has received 9 awards and/or honors. Carla Nunes is regularly invited to review papers for various scientific journals and frequently participates in academic juries, where she serves as the main arguer.
