Dr. Kuai Shen is an artistic researcher of ant worlds specialised in multispecies ethnography. His practice-led research employs technology-based performances and decolonial tactics to overturn dominant models and representations of invertebrates and nonhuman life. Kuai develops the concept of inverted aesthesis: the amplification of insect-human relations and sensorial abilities of invertebrates attuned to the more-than-human cultures, ecologies, and politics of indigenous ontologies. His ant studies have been published in journals such as Center for Humans & Nature, Society and Animals, Antennae, Art&Australia, Acoustic Space, and in books like Distributed Perception. His artworks have been commissioned by Eli Broad Museum, FACT Liverpool, National Art Gallery Vilnius, House of Arts Brno, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Quito. Kuai has been awarded stipends and prizes, such as Musikfonds Germany, Bridge from Michigan State University, the Cynetart Award in Science and Culture of Saxony, the Edith-Russ-Haus Media Prize, and an honorary mention at Prix Ars Electronica. Kuai Shen is currently working as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Lisbon on the Abide project.
