After his graduation in Ceramics and Glass Engineering, Hugo Fernandes (HF) had several years of experience in ceramic industry as production leader and as director of laboratory in porcelain tiles factories. In 2002 he started doing research in the Department of Materials Engineering and Ceramics (DEMaC) at University of Aveiro (UA) and associated laboratory CICECO (Aveiro Institute of Materials) in the field of traditional ceramics (porcelain, structural ceramics and recycling of industrial wastes in ceramic matrices). After his master¿s degree in Ceramics and Glass Engineering his main research interest lied in the area of glasses and glass-ceramics. Parallel research interests comprised the production of glass foams as well as the recycling of industrial wastes using ceramic matrices. HF obtained the PhD degree at from UA and his research work has been focused on the composition-structure-properties correlation of lithium silicate-based glass systems. Since his graduation, he co-authored 59 papers in international peer-reviewed journals with over than 2000 citations (h index 25) and 1 book chapter (ISBN: 978-989-8481-95-5). During the last years, in parallel with his research activities, HF has systematically collaborated in teaching activities at UA in classes in the field of materials science (e.g., Fundamentos e Aplicações de Materiais, Tecnologia dos Materiais, Laboratórios de Eng. de Materiais I & II, Materiais e Tecnologias I, Seminário de Eng. de Materiais) and supervised PhD, master and graduation thesis. Additionally, he is regularly involved in materials science dissemination activities within the academic community and high school students. HF participated in several projects in different areas of materials science and technology such as glass-ceramics for functional applications, microelectromechanical systems, porcelain tiles, additive optimisation for improved ceramics, waste recycling in ceramic matrices, and strategic project. Presently HF is a researcher at DEMaC/CICECO in the frame of DL 57/2016. He collaborated in a bilateral project with Poland (glass microfibres for bone regeneration) and working together with international collaborators in several research fields: Romania (alkali-free bioglasses), Brazil (structural and liquid-liquid phase separation in glasses), Uzbekistan (glasses in the CaO-MgO-SiO2 system) and India (electrical properties of glasses). HF was at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey (USA), as an invited scientist, where he studied glasses in the lithium aluminoborate system. He has active collaborations with several researchers from different institutions such as: Rutgers University (USA), Instituto de Cerámica y Vidrio (Spain), Yurin Polytechnic University in Tashkent (Uzbekistan), Univ. of São Paulo (Brazil), Univ. of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Italy), Technical Univ. Darmstadt (Germany), Univ. of Lille (France), Institut de Physique des Materiaux (Romania), U. Ioannina (Greece), Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo (Portugal), Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute (India). HF is currently member of the Council Board of the European Ceramic Society (ECerS) and Secretary of the Portuguese Ceramic and Glass Society (SPCV). Due to its expertise in glass science, HF has been nominated for the International Advisory Committee of The XVIII Conference of the European Ceramic Society (Lyon, 2-6 July 2023). During the last years, HF has been reviewer for J. Non-Cryst. Solids, J. Eur. Ceram. Soc., Mater. Sci. Eng., Materials, Ceram. Int., Adv. Mater. Sci. Eng., Cerâmica, Ciência & Tecnologia dos Materiais.
