Nuno Francisco Ferreira de Sousa

I have always had a particular interest in the fields of biological sciences. For this reason, I started my degree in Biology in 2018, at the University of Porto - Faculty of Sciences (FCUP), ending in 2021 with a curricular internship at the Interdisciplinary Center for Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR), in the Nutrition and Immunobiology group (NUTRIMU), under the guidance of Dr. Carolina Castro and Prof. Helena Peres. Carolina Castro and Professor Helena Peres, resulting in the report entitled “Impact of dietary inclusion of wine and olive oil waste extracts on the physiological and health status of sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax)”. This work focused on reducing the use of antibiotics in aquaculture by supplementing fish feed with extracts from agro-industrial by-products to strengthen the fish's immune system. It also allowed him to develop laboratory skills in physiology, immunology and molecular biology. In October 2021, I enrolled in the Master's Degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology at FCUP, finishing in January 2024 with my master's thesis entitled “Decoding X-linked lymphoproliferative syndrome: evolutionary genomic and proteomic analyses of the XIAP and SH2D1A genes”, in which I study mutations from an evolutionary point of view in the genome and from the structural and functional point of view of the proteins they encode, allowing me to develop skills associated with phylogenomics and proteomics in silico. The work was carried out at CIIMAR's Evolutionary Genomics and Bioinformatics (EGB) laboratory, under the supervision of Professor Agostinho Antunes, as part of the Blue Young Talent Plus (BYT+) research program and a one-month research initiation grant. I'm currently doing a doctoral program in Neurosciences at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP). The doctoral work is being carried out under the supervision of Professor Nuno Rocha from the School of Health (E2S-IPP) and Professor Patrícia Monteiro from FMUP, in the RISE-Health research unit. At the same time, I lecture at E2S-IPP as a guest assistant.
