Vera Catarina Ferreira de Sousa completed her Bachelor degree in Biochemistry in 2017 at the University of Aveiro (UA). In the same institution, she posteriorly followed the classes in which concluded the Master degree in Molecular Biomedicine in 2019. From a very early age she discovered that research fascinates her, she has a special interest in the clinical field and even more in tissue regeneration. With this in mind, she chose the Bachelor degree in Biochemistry that she knew would satisfy her interests in biology and chemistry. During her course, she was able to develop a global understanding of the phenomena occurring in living organisms. She felt completely fulfilled and certain that this degree gave her, through laboratory experience, crucial competences that allow her to work in research laboratories. In the last year of her Bachelor degree during six months she developed her final degree project on photodynamic therapy in the inactivation of C. albicans in PBS. Next, she chose the Master degree in Molecular Biomedicine and developed the specific and targeted skills for clinical research, in fact, this Master degree is at the interphase between Medicine/Health and Biology and involves knowhow from Molecular Biology, Genomics, Proteomics, Human health, and Pathology. During her master thesis, she worked with photodynamic therapy (aPDT) for inactivation of microorganisms in plasma and whole blood and the aim was the development of a safe protocol for blood disinfection and its derivatives, to prevent possible transfusion-transmitted infections. Her dissertation work was published in 2019 in the international Journal Antibiotics (doi:10.3390/antibiotics8040221) and presented at an international congress in Barcelona. Even during her dissertation year, she participated in other work in cooperation with the Department of Chemistry, which was published in 2020 (doi:10.1016/j.bioorg.2020.103994). Her constant need to acquire new knowledge and be aware of the cutting-edge research is demonstrated by the participation in different workshops, student meetings, national and international conferences (poster presentations) and to act as a volunteer at the Chemistry Olympiads and in the Laboratory of Applied Microbiology. Her main attributes are her autonomy, criticism, sharped opinion, and perspicacity that never fulfills the curiosity that is always attached to the research field, a roller coaster always changing. Apart from all the qualities that she finds required to work in investigation, she also has the humbleness, persistence, a great willingness to learn, and commitment to every project that she enters. In 2020, she joined to the COMPASS Research Group, which belongs to the Associate Laboratory CICECO- Aveiro Institute of Materials, as a research fellow, working under the supervision of Dr. João Borges in a scientific research and technological development project, financed by FCT, focusing on the rational molecular design, synthesis and development of self-regulated supramolecular systems for biomedical purposes (PTDC/QUI-OUT/30658/2017). Within the scope of this project, she is one of the authors of a paper and she also participated in national and international congresses with oral communications. In 2021 she starts her PhD scholarship in Chemistry at the COMPASS Research group.
