Marta Isabel dos Santos Veríssimo Amaral (MV) is an Assistant Researcher at the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM) of the University of Aveiro (UA). MV graduated in Analytical Chemistry from the UA in 1998, with the highest final score (15 out of 20) of that year. She was awarded an FCT scholarship and went directly to PhD studies, where she gained experience in areas as diverse as ceramics and materials, electronics, programming, and analytical chemistry. MV completed the PhD in Chemistry in May 2003 (approved by unanimity) on Analytical applications of mass sensors based on different piezoelectric substrates. She was awarded three times with FCT post-doctoral fellowships from 2004 to 20018. Although MV had three interruptions in her scientific career (two by maternity and one for the end of the fellowship), she published 27 papers in highly ranked international journals (82% are Q1, and 15 papers are in the top 5 rankings), with 20 of them as the first author (Veríssimo, M.I.S.) and two as the corresponding author. MV has an h-index of 12 and 363 citations (source: Scopus January 2024). The MV work has been presented at 29 national/international conferences, nine as oral communications (1 as invited). Since 2000, MV has been an integrated member of the CESAM, an Associate Laboratory of the UA. From 2014 to 2018, she was also an integrated member of the Aveiro Institute of Materials (CICECO) Associate Laboratory of the UA. Current research interests include i) the development of chemical sensors with emphasis on analytical applications on different matrices (food, water, air), ii) Electronic noses for VOC detection, and iii) Molecularly imprinted polymers as selective layers of chemical sensors. MV has participated in scientific divulgation activities during the last years, namely TechDays2019, Open Campus UA 2015 and 2019, and was co-host of the course "Introdução aos sensors - Ibersensor" in September 2021. In 2022, MV was involved in the organisation of ISOEN 2022 (https://www.isoen2022.org/) and IBERSENSOR 2022 (https://ibersensor2022.events.chemistry.pt/), both international congresses on sensors held at Aveiro (Portugal), and published a book entitled "A look at sensors in the Iberian peninsula and Latin America: year" (UA), and was guest editor for a "Sensors" special issue entitled "Sensors for Environmental Threats". At present, MV is participating in two research projects, one with national funds from FCT (Pollinate, PTDC/EAM-AMB/1509/2021) and the other with international funds from EEAgrants (COASTAL Project, PT-INNOVATION-0078).
