Carlos Geraldes graduated in Chemistry at the University of Coimbra, in 1971, after a student career that included attendance and approval in several subjects of the courses of Chemical and Mathematical Engineering, and during which he was still a member of the Board of the Football Section of the Academic Association of Coimbra. He obtained a PhD in Chemistry in 1976 at Wolfson College, University of Oxford (United Kingdom), under the guidance of Professor Robert J.P. Williams, and Habilitation at the University of Coimbra in 1986. After his PhD, he joined the faculty of the Department of Chemistry at FCTUC, having become a full professor in 1988. In 1992 he was co-founder of the Department of Biochemistry at FCTUC, later incorporated into the current Department of Life Sciences. He was a member and coordinator (between 2002 and 2008) of the Research Center “Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy”, based in the Chemistry Department of FCTUC. Between 2009 and 2013 he joined the Associated Laboratory “Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology” at the University of Coimbra as coordinator of the Laboratory for Bioinorganic Chemistry and Biomedical NMR, having moved to the Coimbra Chemistry Center in 2014 as a member of the Biological Chemistry Group, as well as being a member of the NMR Laboratory / National NMR Network. With over 40 years of experience in the field of Biomedical NMR and Molecular Imaging, his research activity has been mainly dedicated to the development of new agents for diagnosis and therapy, as well as multimodal imaging strategies, having produced to date more than 300 scientific articles (with about 7000 citations, h-index 45), as well as several pedagogical books. Professor Carlos Geraldes is a scientist with an international reputation, who established an extensive network of scientific collaborations and taught in several renowned schools in addition to the University of Coimbra. These include the Universities of S. Paulo (Brazil), Oxford and Durham (United Kingdom), the latter having recently been a Senior Research Fellow visiting Trevelyan College. During this productive academic and scientific career, his vast knowledge and his thirst to investigate inspired several of his disciples, infected by this indomitable will to understand why.
