MJB Amorim graduated in Biology (1997, University of Coimbra), MsC in Ecology (2000, University of Coimbra), PhD in Biology (2004) and habilitation in Biology (2019), both at the University of Aveiro. The PhD was a split grant between UAVR and the German research company ECT Oekotoxicology. After this (2005/2006) she continued as a post Doc in Belgium, University of Antwerp, and as Auxiliary Professor partial time (50%) at UAVR. She started a full time research position (2006) establishing a group, ca. 10 investigators (3 Post-Docs, 6 PhDs, and 1-2 degree and MsC students are in continuous flow), 10 PhD students have completed. A wide international network has been developed and consolidated, among other through research visits, which is also reflected in the publications i.e. 85% of the publications are with international authors. Major scientific achievements include the transcriptome assembly and development of microarray for 2 soil ecotoxicology model species (Enchytraeus albidus and E. crypticus) [besides these 2 there are only 5 other ecotox species (2 soil and 3 aquatic) for which such a high-throughput (HTP) tool was developed]. These HTP-omics represent a major step forward to understand the underlying molecular mechanisms to stress. Additional molecular tools have been adapted or developed within her group. These achievements were included to integrate responses at various levels of organization within the organisms and moving towards a systems biology approach. At present MJB Amorim has sequenced the full E. crypticus genome (short and long reads with Illumina and PacBio). This is the first detailed sequencing of members of the Oligochaete familie - this sequencing will seriously potentiate the tools for system biology. She has published 180+ papers in international peer reviewed journals. 90% of these papers are as a senior author (corresponding author or first, last author). Of these, mostly published among ecotoxicology journals, some higher impact factors (IF) can be highlighted, e.g. Nature Nanotechnology (IF:31.5) and nanotoday (IF: 19.2), which are among the highest IF journals in the area/years. She authored 2 main book chapters (Taylor & Francis and Springer Publications). In addition, she has joined international conferences and meetings, with more than 50 platform and 50 poster presentations. She is continuously invited as a speaker, acting as a session chair, and organising special sessions at various international meetings, e.g. co-organised SETAC - congress in 2008 with 2000 people attending, in 2011 was chairing a discussion group in ICEO (International Conference on Environmental OMICS in China), in 2013 chaired a large session (2 days) on Environmental Omics at SETAC Europe (Glasgow), in 2014 chaired a session and was one of the main invited speakers at the 7th SETAC Europe SESSS (Special Science Symposium) on "Fate and ecotoxicity of nanoparticles in the environment - current status and the way forward", Brussels, 2-3 October, 2014. She joined 4 international ring-tests which resulted in new OECD/ISO guidelines. MJB Amorim is and has been involved in several funded research projects, 11 of which she has been the principal investigator, including 4 Large-scale EU Collaborative projects, 1 in FP7 (2013-2017, SUN), 3 in H2020 (2017-2023, BIORIMA, nanoinformaTIX, NANORIGO) in nanotechnologies as WP responsible. These EU projects include ca 35-40 partners of 16 countries and a total funding of 11, 8, 7 and 4 million euros. Since 2007 she has coordinated and lectured the Post-Graduation course (included in Doctoral and Summer Schools programs) "Practical approach to ecotoxicogenomics", MJB Amorim was SETAC Europe President (2015) (Society of of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, the largest world ecotoxicology society). She was council member, chaired the Global Soil Advisory Group, awarded the SETAC Fellow award (2018) and been distinguished in the book "Woman in Science" (2019).
