Susana G. Santos is an Assistant Investigator at the Microenvironments for New Therapies Group of i3S-Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde, and INEB-Instituto Nacional de Engenharia Biomédica, University of Porto, Portugal. Susana graduated in Biology at the University of Aveiro, and got a MSc in Molecular Microbiology from the same university. She was awarded a PhD in Biomedical Sciences, from ICBAS-Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas de Abel Salazar, University of Porto (GABBA PhD programme, 2005). Her thesis was in immunology, focusing on biochemical aspects of MHC-class I molecules, their folding, cell surface display and protein interactions, and the work was performed in collaboration with IBMC-Instituto de Biologia Molecular e Celular, and the School of Life Sciences (SLS), University of Dundee, Scotland, UK. After, she worked as a Post-doc, on dendritic cell activation, and MHC-class I structures in exosomes, at the Medical School of the University of St Andrews Scotland, UK, and later became Medical Research Council (MRC) Career Development Fellow, at MRC-Protein Phosphorylation Unit, in SLS, Dundee, studying cell-signalling within the immune system. Susana moved to INEB, now part of i3S, in December 2008, and since then has been working on the inflammatory response to biomaterials and the interplay between inflammation and tissue regeneration, mainly for osteoarticular applications. Her research interests are in understanding and modulating: 1) the response of immune cells (particularly macrophages and dendritic cells) to injury and biomaterial implantation; 2) the communication between immune cells and tissue/stromal cells (e.g. MSC), focusing on the role of Extracellular Vesicles (EV). Her ultimate goal is to design new therapeutic strategies for tissue repair/regeneration, and to fight cancer. Susana has participated in 22 funded projects, 15 concluded, 6 ongoing and 1 approved for funding. She is currently PI of a project funded by ON Foundation, on EV-functionalized scaffolds for spine fusion; Co-PI of a FCT-funded project on non-coding RNAs for bone regeneration; and participates as team member in another 4 projects, including a national consortium dedicated to biomaterial coatings for the repair of aged bone, and a Horizon 2020-funded project investigating new nanoenabled materials for cartilage repair in osteoarthritis. She participated in 2 COST Actions, 1 concluded and 1 ongoing. She is also co-founder and co-coordinator, of the Portuguese Network on Extracellular Vesicles - PNEV (since 2019). Susana has supervised 6 PhD (4 as supervisor and 2 as co-supervisor) and 15 MSc students that have completed their thesis, and currently supervises 3 PhD (as co-supervisor) and 2 MSc students. She has also supervised 5 research technicians, and hosted 5 international researchers, 3 undergraduate (ERASMUS/IAESTE), 1 PhD student and 1 Post-doc, and has participated in several PhD and MSc thesis examinations. Susana is co-author of 8 published book chapters and 56 manuscripts published in international peer reviewed journals (excluding conference proceedings), with an average IF of 5.973 and H-index of 25 (Scopus). She has presented 8 invited talks, including keynotes at SPCE-TC2022, TERMIS 2019 and NanoMed 2019, and other 10 oral communications in national and international conferences. She also contributed to another 27 oral and 45 panel communications, presented at national and international conferences. She has been awarded 3 prizes for research innovation in Portugal, and is co-inventor in 2 recently submitted Provisional Patent Requests. Susana regularly organises scientific meetings (e.g. Symposium in Immunomodulation in Cancer and Regeneration, that will have this year its 4th edition), participates in teaching at graduate and post-graduate levels, and in public dissemination of science. She also integrates the i3S Ethics and Responsible Research Conduct Committee.
