André Valente finished his Degree in Physical Oceanography and Meteorology from University of Lisbon (Portugal) in 2004, with a thesis on ocean remote sensing in scope of EU C2C project. He then worked for three years (2005-2008) at University of Lisbon, where he processed satellite imagery for oil-spill applications (FCT MODHIMAR), studied coastal turbid variability using ocean colour satellite imagery (FCT AMAZING), participated in oceanographic cruises and got additional education, including a Postgraduation in Ocean Remote Sensing at the National Oceanography Center (UK) and a GIS certificate. He then did his PhD at the University of Azores (Portugal) in air-sea interactions in scope of CLIMAAT e CLIMARCOST INTERREG projects (2008-2012), which included visits to the University of Madeira, Coriolis Rotating Tank (Grenoble) and Hydrographic Institute (Lisbon), participation in oceanographic cruises and help in the maintenance of the wave buoys and meteorological stations of CLIMAAT project. His PhD focused on Northeast Atlantic climate variability and its effects on biological processes, which he completed in 2013. From 2013 to 2022 he was a post-doc researcher at MARE-ULisboa, where he was team member of the ESA Ocean Colour Climate Change Initiative (OC-CCI), Atlantic Area iFADO and Eumetsat OMAPS projects. In this period he developed the global bio-optical in-situ database used for development of ESA satellite products, studied decadal variability of water masses in West Iberia using historical profiles, and studied the drivers (e.g. wave resuspension and coccolithophore blooms) of coastal turbidity in West Iberia using satellite data. He was visiting researcher for more than 1 year at Plymouth Marine Laboratory working with Dr. Shubha Sathyendranath in scope of ESA OC-CCI project. Since 2022, he has been working as an Earth Observation Project Officer at the AIR Centre. He published 16 articles in journals and actively collaborates with other scientists, co-authoring scientific papers with more than 200 collaborators in various fields from ocean colour to plastic pollution. He works in remote sensing, ocean colour, physical oceanography, climate variability and phytoplankton dynamics. His expertise is the application of remote sensing methods for open-ocean and coastal oceanography studies. His main regions of study are the Azores Archipelago, Northeast Atlantic, Western Iberia and Black Sea.
