Edgar Pinto holds both a BSc and MSc in Biomedical Engineering, with a specialization in Medical Electronics, from the University of Minho (UM). Throughout his academic journey, he was awarded six merit-based scholarships. In 2022, driven by his interest in research, he collaborated with the ALGORITMI Center at UM on a project focused on optimizing organ-on-a-chip geometries. This work earned him the "Prémio UMinho de Iniciação na Investigação Científica" and led to a conference paper presented at IMECE 2023, titled “Optimization of the Flow Parameters for a Liver Organ-on-a-Chip Computational Model.” He actively promoted this research through presentation at both "Verão no Campus" (UM) and the European Researchers’ Night (NEI). Since 2023, Edgar has been working at the Life and Health Sciences Research Institute (ICVS), School of Medicine, UM, under a research fellowship funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). Prior to starting his master’s thesis, he strengthened his background in artificial intelligence by completing a specialized course in machine learning offered by Stanford University and DeepLearning.AI. His master’s thesis focused on exploring and benchmarking anomaly detection methods for the automatic identification of extracardiac findings in cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) images, with the goal of improving diagnostic accuracy and supporting more effective patient care. This research has led to several outcomes. In 2024, he delivered an oral presentation at the ICVS Retreat and presented a poster titled “Detection of Extracardiac Findings in Cardiac Magnetic Resonance: A Comparative Study” at both the 28th Annual Conference on Medical Image Understanding and Analysis (MIUA 2024, Manchester, UK) and the 30th Portuguese Conference on Pattern Recognition (RECPAD 2024, Covilhã, Portugal). Furthermore, part of his thesis work was recently published in Applied Sciences (MDPI), under the title “Benchmarking Anomaly Detection Methods for Extracardiac Findings in Cardiac MRI.” Beyond his academic and research accomplishments, Edgar has pursued long-standing interests in both sports and music. He played soccer at the federated level and learned to play both piano and guitar, demonstrating a commitment to personal growth across diverse disciplines.
