Helena Passos is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto. She obtained her PhD in Chemical Engineering in 2017 of the University of Aveiro. Between 2017 and 2019, she worked as a post-doctoral researcher at CICECO ¿ Aveiro Institute of Materials under an European Research Council (ERC) project focused on the use of aqueous biphasic systems for the purification of egg yolk antibodies as alternative biopharmaceuticals, and an international ERA-MIN project concerning the recovery of cobalt and rare earth elements (REE) from nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries. In September of 2018, H. Passos was awarded with a Junior Researcher position by FCT (CEEC IND 2017) to develop novel and sustainable processes based on the use of alternative and green solvents for the recovery and recycling of critical raw materials from electronic waste. Since September of 2023, H. Passos is an assistant professor at the Department of Chemiscal Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, and member of LSRE-LCM - Laboratory of Separation and Reaction Engineering - Laboratory of Catalysis and Materials and ALiCE- Associate Laboratory in Chemical Engineering. H. Passos scientific research has been focusing on (i) development, design and characterization of new and greener solvents, namely ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DES); (ii) optimization of hydrometallurgical systems, considering leaching, separation and recovery steps, aiming to develop more efficient and selective processes for metals recovery; (iii) design and use of stimuli responsive systems to the development of integrated processes, always in line with Circular Economy and Green Chemistry principles. H. Passos has published 56 scientific articles, including 4 critical reviews: 2 on Green Chem journal (IF 11.03) [1 classified as a Highly Cited Paper, Web of Science], 1 on Crit Rev Environ Sci Technol journal (IF 11.75), and 1 on Curr Opin Green Sustain Chem (IF 8.84). All 56 articles were published in JCR SCI journals, counting with +1825 citations and an h-index of 23 ( Scopus on November 2023). She has published in several high IF journals, namely Angew Chem Int Ed (IF 16.82), Chem Eng J (IF 16.74), Green Chem (IF 11.03), ACS Sustain Chem Eng (IF 9.22) and Sep Purif Technol (IF 9.14), with an average journal IF of 7.64. She is the first author in 16 papers, corresponding author in 7, and worked with 131 different co-authors with diverse affiliations and internationally recognized as leading scientists in green solvents field, namely H. Ohno (Japan), R.D. Rogers (United States), I. Billard (France) and J.A.P. Coutinho (Portugal). Moreover, she has contributed with +150 oral and posters communications and 2 plenary/invited lectures in national and international conferences. H. Passos supervise(d) 1 post-doctoral researcher, 3 PhD, 9 MCs (3 international) and 9 BCs students. H. Passos was PI of one international Bilateral Cooperation with France and Co-PI of another with Brazil. Currently she is the PI of one FCT R&D project, PlatILPlus, aiming the recycling and recovery of platinum group metals and rare earth elements from spent automotive catalytic converters, and team member of a European project under HORIZON programme. H. Passos was guest editor of one special issue and is reviewer on several multidisciplinary journals.
