MANUEL ALBERTO CREGO BARREIRO

My academic career has been developed mainly at the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain) and the University of Minho (Portugal). My research has focused on the neurocognitive mechanisms associated with alcohol use, particularly binge drinking, in adolescents and young adults. During my doctoral training, I studied brain activity associated with cognitive processes such as attention, working memory, and inhibitory control in university students with a binge drinking pattern, mainly using event-related potentials (ERPs), while also analysing epidemiological and neuropsychological data in this population. I completed my PhD in June 2012 and received the Extraordinary PhD Award from the School of Psychology of the University of Santiago de Compostela. Since 2013, at the Psychological Neuroscience Laboratory (PLN) of the Psychology Research Centre (CIPsi), University of Minho, I have expanded this work through the use of electroencephalography (EEG), functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and other complementary approaches to investigate the neurocognitive consequences of binge drinking and related patterns of alcohol use. During this period, I also received advanced training in neuroimaging and multimodal methodologies, including MRI, DTI, fMRI, and simultaneous EEG-fMRI recording and analysis, supported by a research stay at the Radiology Institute (InRad), Faculty of Medicine, University of São Paulo (FMUSP), Brazil, and specialised technical training in multimodal data acquisition. My research trajectory has progressively moved from the characterization of neurocognitive alterations associated with binge drinking to more translational goals, including the identification of vulnerability markers, the study of developmental risk processes, and the design of targeted interventions. My current interests focus particularly on the early detection of young people at greater risk of problematic alcohol use and on the development and evaluation of intervention approaches based on cognitive training, bias modification, and neuromodulation. Overall, my work aims to contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying risky alcohol use and to support the development of more effective prevention and intervention strategies for adolescents and young adults.
