Indrani Coondoo obtained her PhD in Applied Physics (2008) from the University of Delhi, India, supported by a competitive national CSIR-UGC doctoral fellowship. She is currently a Researcher at CICECO–Aveiro Institute of Materials, University of Aveiro (UA), Portugal, working within a PRR project. Recently, she was awarded an FCT-CEEC Assistant Researcher contract (2024.09019.CEECIND), planned to start in 2026. She began her research career at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), India, first as a project assistant on a DST-funded project and later as a Research Associate supported by CSIR grant. Her early work focused on liquid crystals and on tailoring their functional properties through ferroelectric nanoparticle doping. During this period, she co-invented an LC-based optical memory device that resulted in a granted US patent (US 8994911B2, 2015). She subsequently worked as a Visiting Researcher at the University of Puerto Rico (USA), investigating multiferroic thin films grown by RF sputtering and pulsed laser deposition (PLD). In 2011, she joined CICECO/UA as a postdoctoral fellow and studied ferroelectric films deposited by PLD for optoelectronics. She then secured an individual FCT postdoctoral grant (SFRH/BPD/81032/2011) and completed a six-year postdoctoral period (from 2012) focused on lead-free piezoelectric materials, while building expertise in wet-chemical synthesis and scanning probe microscopy for nanoscale piezoelectric and magnetic response. From 2019 to 2025, she worked as a contracted Researcher at CICECO/UA (UID/CTM/50011/2019), expanding her research to ceramic and polymer composites for energy storage and solid-state cooling. In 2021, she won an FCT project as PI (EXPL/CTM-CTM/0687/2021) on multifunctional polymer nanocomposite films for energy storage and electrocaloric cooling. More recently, her work has extended towards additive manufacturing approaches for 3D-printed piezoelectric composites. Dr. Coondoo has benefited from research mobility across laboratories in Portugal, Spain, Japan, USA and India, and has built transnational collaborations with R&D groups based in Portugal, USA, Spain, Italy, Poland, UK, France, Japan, Russia and India. She has participated in several projects and has supervised/trained 3 Bachelor’s and 6 Master’s students, 2 postdoctoral researchers, 2 PhD students and 1 PhD exchange student. Her outputs include 65+ journal publications (with ~50% as first/corresponding author) and 5 conference papers, as well as 4 edited books and 4 book chapters. She has delivered 60+ conference presentations (including 5 invited/keynote talks), and received two best-poster awards. A review article on piezoelectric materials that she authored is among the most cited papers in Journal of Advanced Dielectrics. Her work has attracted ~1730 citations with an h-index of 24 (Scopus). Her results on co-doped BFO thin films featured on the cover of Materials Research Bulletin (47(12), 2012). She has undertaken scientific missions to Japan and Spain, including a COST Actions Short-Term Scientific Mission. She has organized five workshops, chaired conference sessions and served on organizing committees of international conferences, including ISAF (University of Aveiro) and ISIF (University of Puerto Rico). She serves on editorial boards and has guest-edited several journal special issues. She regularly reviews manuscripts for journals including Nano Energy, ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces and Renewable & Sustainable Energy Reviews. She is a life member of the Indian Science Congress Association. Her research interests focus on multifunctional materials (bulk, thin films, polymers and nanostructures) for energy harvesting, electro-/magnetocaloric cooling, energy storage, sensors and actuators.
