He has completed his Master in Informatics in 1997 in the University of Minho and, from the same university, he received his PhD in Informatics in 2004. In the research centre ALGORITMI, he develops work in the Computer Science and Technology (CST) research line (algoritmi.uminho.pt/research-teams/cst), in which he is a senior member of the Synthetic Intelligence Lab (algoritmi.uminho.pt/research-teams/islab). He is an Artificial Intelligence researcher for more than 25 years and his main interests are in the fields of Intelligent Agents, Sensorization and Data Science, with application to domains such as Computational Sustainability and Smart Cities. He has participated in several research projects sponsored by Portuguese and European public and private Institutions and has supervised several PhD and MSc students. He is the co-author of over 80 book chapters, journal papers, conference and workshop papers and books. Furthermore, he served as an organizer of several international conferences and events, namely ISAmI'2010 - International Symposium on Ambient Intelligence, IDC'2015 - International Symposium on Intelligent Distributed Computing, and the workshop series CCSCS - Citizen-Centric Smart Cities Services since 2017, a part of the International Conference on Intelligent Environments, the most prestigious conference in the world in the field. He was the director of the Doctoral Program on Informatics from 2012 to 2016, and from 2012 to 2014 he was member of the board of direction of the Master in Informatics Engineering and the Master in Informatics at the University of Minho. He is a member of the Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence (APPIA) and, between 2006 and 2011, a member of the association Direction Board. In addition, he is a founder member of the Portuguese Robotics Society. Between 2005 and 2010, he was a member of the direction board of the Institution of Engineers of Portugal, Informatics branch of the North region.

Unrelated to this fact the number of portable and wearable devices has also been increasing throughout the population of most countries. With this advent, the capacity to monitor and register data about people habits and locations as well as more complex data such as intensity and strength of movements has created an op (2014): https://doi.org/10.9781/ijimai.2014.313.

  1. Explainable artificial intelligence on smart human mobility: a comparative study approach. Explainable artificial intelligence has been used in several scientific fields to understand how and why a machine learning model makes its predictions. Its characteristics have allowed for greater transparency and outcomes in AI-powered decision-making. This building trust and confidence can be useful in human mobility research. This work provides a comparative study in terms of the explainabilit. 2023. Rosa, Luís; Silva, Fábio André Souto; Analide, Cesar. https://hdl.handle.net/1822/83658.

  2. Smart human mobility in smart cities. Nowadays, society has challenged the scienti c community to nd solutions able to use technology to solve the gentri cation3 of city centers. Within this context, smart cities have had an important role because they view each citizen as a data source. In the same way, the Internet of Things network increases the number of physical devices generating peta-bytes of information into a Smart city archi. 2023. 3. Explainable decision tree on smart human mobility. Artificial Intelligence is a hot topic and Machine Learning is one of the most fluent approaches and practices. The problem with many AI models is that they can be useful for predicting but they are bad at explaining why they behave a certain way. In some contexts, the explanation may even be more important than the prediction itself, mainly in systems in which decisions are made based on their pr. 2022. 4. Distress detection in road pavements using neural networks. Combining Computer Vision (CV) and Anomaly Detection (AD), there is a convergence of methodologies using convolutional layers in AD architectures, which we consider an innovation in the field. The main goal of this work is to present different Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) architectures, applying them to distress detection in road pavements and comparing the results obtained in each approach. 5. A multi-agent system for automated machine learning. Machine Learning (ML) focuses on giving machines the ability to forecast, predict, or classify without being explicitly programmed to do so. To achieve such goals, large amounts of data are used to conceive models that can adapt to unseen data and to new scenarios. However, applying ML models to real-world business domains is a resource-intensive and time-consuming effort. Automated machine learni. 2022. 6. Sentiment analysis based on smart human mobility: a comparative study of ML models. The great social development of the last few decades has led more and more to free time becoming an essential aspect of daily life. As such, there is the need to maximize free time trying to enjoy it as much as possible and spending it in places with positive atmospheres that result in positive sentiments. In that vein, using Machine Learning models, this project aims to create a time series predi. 2022. 7. Analyzing metrics to understand human mobility phenomena: challenges and solutions. Defining basic metrics that analyze human motion is important for urban planning and population mobility forecasting. These metrics are applied to understand extensive human mobility data generated from multiple sources. This means that our understanding of the basic metrics governing human motion is conditioned by integrating different data sources available. To the best of our knowledge, this ar. 2022. 9. Urban human mobility modelling and prediction: impact of comfort and well-being indicators. There are increasingly more discussions on and guidelines about different levels of indicators surrounding smart cities (e.g., comfort, well-being and weather conditions).
