Daniel Galvão holds a BA in Translation from the School of Social Sciences and Humanities (NOVA FCSH), having graduated with a final grade of 18.43 (Excellent). His academic distinction was recognised through three Merit Scholarships: one awarded by the Directorate General for Higher Education (DGES) and two conferred by NOVA University of Lisbon, specifically the NOVA Young Talent Award and the Undergraduate Merit and Excellence Award, which resulted in his inclusion on the university’s Honour Roll. Due to his exceptional undergraduate performance, Galvão was invited by his professors to advance directly to doctoral studies, a trajectory predicated upon the award of a Doctoral Research Scholarship in Translation Studies from the Research Centre for Communication and Culture (CECC) at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP). He is currently a PhD candidate funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) within the Inter-university PhD Programme in Translation Studies, a partnership between NOVA FCSH and the Faculty of Human Sciences of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP FCH), and is affiliated with the Centre for English, Translation, and Anglo-Portuguese Studies (CETAPS). Before embarking on his academic career, Galvão established himself professionally in the performing arts, notably as a singer and musical theatre actor. Between 2013 and 2023, he participated in numerous Portuguese productions, collaborating frequently with prominent companies such as Filipe La Féria Produções and Artfeist, as well as with Ladybug Production LTD on an international tour spanning Spain, France, Italy, and Brazil. His multidisciplinary work in dubbing studios, including Iyuno SDI Group and Pim Pam Pum Audiovisual, encompassed roles as singer, voice actor, musical director, and song translator. Additionally, Galvão has contributed to several Portuguese musical theatre productions as vocal director, arranger, and composer, collaborating with respected companies such as Filipe La Féria Produções, Artfeist, B Produções, Caixa de Cena Produções, and CRI’ART. Galvão’s scholarly research explores the intersection of translation, music, vocal performance, and the performing arts. He published the article “Songwriting as Translation: A Practice-as-Research Approach” in the special issue Music and/in Translation of the journal Translation Matters. Subsequent to this publication, he was invited to join the journal’s editorial team and currently serves as Associate Editor. His recent academic contributions also include presentations at FLUP (“Translationality in The Hours: An Operatic Adaptation by Kevin Puts”), NOVA Translation Talks (“Song Translation for the Dubbing of Films and Series”), the New Voices in Portuguese Translation Studies symposium (“Rendering Place into Song”), and the III Lisbon Spring School in Translation Studies (“Singable Translations: A Study of Song Translations in Portuguese Productions of Broadway and West End Musicals”).
