Dr. Peter Roebeling is Senior Researcher at the Department of Environment & Planning (DAO) and Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM) of the University of Aveiro (UA) since 2008. He holds a PhD in Social Sciences from Wageningen University (Netherlands; 2003) and an MSc in Agriculture and Natural Environment (Wageningen University, Netherlands; 1995), and has over 25 years experience in the area of sustainable development - leading integrated research projects regarding strategic resource use planning and environmental management as well as pathways for adoption of sustainable practices in Europe, Oceania, South-East Asia and Latin America. He has worked at the International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CGIAR-CIAT; Colombia; 1995), the National University (UNA-CINPE; Costa Rica; 1996-1999), Wageningen University (WUR - Social Sciences; Netherlands; 1999-2003), the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO - Ecosystem Sciences; Australia; 2003-2007) and Wageningen Research (WUR - Wageningen Economic Research; Netherlands; 2019-2022). His socio-environmental-economic research focuses on sustainable regional development through Coastal-Marine Resource Futures (CMRF), Cost-Effective Footprint Reductions (CEFR), Integrated Catchment and Coastal Zone Management (ICCZM), Sustainable Urbanizing Landscape Development (SULD), Efficient Air Quality Management (EAQM) and Coastal Erosion and Adaptation Strategies (CEAS), and is based in integrated explorative and predictive approaches that support stakeholders in the identification, development and implementation of sustainable development strategies. His international research impact is evidenced by the publication of 70 journal papers, 5 books, 9 book chapter, 68 conference papers and 65 project reports. He is editorial board member of Landscape and Urban Planning and World Water Policy (previously New Water Policy and Practice), guest-editor for Resources (2019) and Water Resources and Economics (2014), and peer reviewer for 17 ISI journals (5 on a regular basis). He has ample international experience through the lead of and participation in research projects (33; Horizon-EU, H2020, FP7, INTERREG-IVC, FCT, APA, ACIAR, MTSRF and CSIRO), conference organizing (2) and scientific (8) committees, and international conferences (36). He has organizational management expertise as board member of the University Council (WUR; 2000-2002), deputy program leader WfHC-Floodplain Renewal (CSIRO; 2005-2007), leader of the Laboratory of Integrated Planning (CESAM; 2016-2019), leader of the Institutions, Livelihoods and Environment team (DAO; 2016-2019), board member of the Departmental Council (DAO; 2010-2022) and leader of the Environmental Instruments Group (DAO; 2022-present). Finally, 10 PhD-students (4 completed; 1 submitted; 5 on-going) and 50 MSc-students (48 completed; 2 on-going) have been (co-) supervised.
