LC Silva (LCS) is an Assistant Professor at the FF/ULisboa and Head of the Bioimaging Unit (2017/) at the iMed.ULisboa. She obtained her PhD in Chemistry/Molecular Biophysics (2006) at the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) and her habilitation in Pharmaceutical Sciences/Biochemistry (2017) at the FF/ULisboa. She was a postdoc at the Weizmann Institute of Science (WIS). In 2011, she consolidated her independent research team - the Molecular & Cellular Biophysics (MCB) - that started under her appointment as Ciência 2008 Assistant Researcher (2009-2014) at the FF/ULisboa, followed by a FCT Investigator (2015-2020) research position. LCS has an interdisciplinary background in biochemistry & cell biology, quantitative photophysics & molecular biophysics. Her multidisciplinary research bridges membrane biophysics and cell biology, to tackle the role of membrane biophysical properties in cell function and pathology. Specifically, LCS is interested in lipids and their interplay in biological membranes, aiming to evaluate their role in membrane organization and function, and to provide the molecular tools to develop improved therapeutics. To support her independent research LCS secured competitive funding as PI of 4 FCT grants (ap 0.74ME), and as team member of 2 FCT-funded doctoral programs (M2B-PhD & i3DU) and 9 research projects (>2.5ME), including European collaborative projects. The output of LCS work includes 9 book chapters and 50 ISI papers in top specialty journals (80% in Q1), guest editor of 2 special issues dedicated to Sphingolipid research, and ap. 70 oral and 120 poster communications in conferences and seminars. The impact of the work is significant (>2200 citations, h-index=25) and widely recognized by the scientific community, as shown by the frequent invitations to participate as a speaker (> 40) and as a session chair in conferences of excellence, as EMBO and Gordon Research Conferences. During her career, LCS was awarded 2 FCT research positions (Ciência 2008 and FCT Investigator 2014), 2 fellowships (postdoc and PhD) and 18 grants from renowned scientific societies to participate in international conferences. LCS is associate editor of All Life (Taylor & Francis) and Cells (MDPI) journals, and editorial board member for Scientific Reports (Nature), Frontiers in membrane physiology and Frontiers in biophysics. LCS is evaluator of international projects, reviewer for several publishers, and was jury of several MSc and PhD theses. LCS is enrolled in activities supporting the training of students and early career researchers. More than 30 researchers, including 7 undergraduated students, 11 research fellows, 7 MsC, 9 PhD and 3 postdocs, developed or are currently developing work under her supervision. Of these, 4 MSc and 6 PhD students already obtained their degrees. LCS has also been involved in various teaching activities, including Biochemistry and Physics courses for MSc students, and implemented the Pharmaceutical Biophysics PhD course at the i3DU doctoral program. LCS is also engaged in science dissemination through the organization of meetings. In 2019, she organized the FEBS Special Meeting in Sphingolipid Biology (Cascais, Portugal), one of the largest conferences in the field with over 200 participants, and co-organized in 2021, the 11th International Ceramide (virtual) Conference (www.sphingolipidbiology.com/icc). Moreover, in 2020, LCS created the Sphingolipid Biology web-based platform for researchers [website www.sphingolipidbiology.com, & social networks, twitter.com/SL_Biology, www.youtube.com/c/SphingolipidBiology], to promote science dissemination through the organization of live-webinars and conferences with leading experts, to advertise science-related activities and career opportunities, and to encourage regular meetings (every two weeks) and collaborations between researchers. It also aims to provide equal opportunities for all, in science dissemination activities.
